Farnworth's roads and why EGR faults are common here

Farnworth sits at a crossroads between Bolton's town centre and the motorway network. The main road runs straight through it, connecting Moses Gate and Kearsley to Bolton's ring roads and feeding traffic into the motorway network above. Distribution work, trade runs, and local deliveries are the daily rhythm here, vans heading north to Bolton or south toward the motorway, tradespeople running between Kearsley, Walkden, and Worsley, small fleet operators based out of units around Harper Green Road.

The vehicles doing that work are the ones most likely to present with EGR faults. Stop-start conditions at busy junctions, short cross-town runs that never allow the diesel engine to reach full operating temperature, repeat cold starts from a yard or home address, these are the conditions in which the EGR valve gradually accumulates carbon in its passages and ports. The valve fouls, sticks, or loses the ability to regulate correctly. The ECU detects the underperformance, logs a fault code, and drops the engine into limp mode.

In a commercial vehicle, that is not a minor inconvenience. It's the van out of service at the start of the working day.

What limp mode means in practice

The warning light comes on, power cuts sharply, and the vehicle is limited to reduced performance, RPM restricted, throttle response dulled, the van crawling rather than working. The ECU fault code on the EGR system is what triggers this; the engine is protecting itself by limiting what it will do.

Cleaning removes the carbon deposits for a period. A replacement valve resets the fault. But neither changes the Farnworth driving pattern that caused the build-up, and on a vehicle doing the same routes day after day, the condition comes back. The EGR valve is failing because of how the vehicle is being used, not despite it.

What the modification does

EGR removal and EGR delete are the same service, a software-based ECU remap that removes the exhaust gas recirculation system from the engine's operating parameters. The valve stays physically in place. The ECU is remapped so it no longer commands it, no longer monitors it, and no longer logs fault codes when it fails.

The work is done via the OBD port, with the engine bay closed throughout. No components are removed or disturbed. We read all fault codes before starting, write the modified map, verify the result is correct, and clear all EGR-related codes before leaving.

Limp mode caused by the EGR fault clears once the fault condition is removed from the system. The modification is permanent. The fault does not return.

FAQs

What vehicles do you cover in Farnworth?
We cover diesel cars, vans, and light commercials of most makes and models. If you want to confirm your vehicle before booking, call 0161 694 7331 and we'll check it in advance.
Will this fix my limp mode?
If the limp mode has been triggered by an EGR fault code, yes, the remap removes the fault condition permanently. The EGR code will not return. If limp mode has a separate cause, we'll identify it during the pre-remap diagnostic and let you know what it is before proceeding.
How long does the job take?
Most jobs take around 60 to 90 minutes on site. The vehicle is ready to move when we leave. There is no need to arrange garage collection or a recovery vehicle.
Is there a call-out charge on top of the £220?
No. The £220 is the total, visit, remap, verification, and fault code clear. No extras, and we'll confirm the price before we book anything.
