EGR cleaning, or a permanent software fix?

If your EGR warning light has come on, your engine is running rough, or your diesel is down on power, you have two options: clean the EGR valve, or remove it from the equation entirely with a software delete. This page explains both so you can make the right call for your vehicle.

What is EGR cleaning?

EGR cleaning involves removing the carbon deposits that build up inside your EGR valve and the passages around it. Over time, exhaust gases push soot and oily residue through the system. Enough buildup and the valve sticks open or closed, triggering fault codes and causing rough idle, loss of power, and increased fuel consumption.

Cleaning the valve and passages clears that buildup and, in many cases, restores normal operation. It can be done with chemical egr cleaner sprays, or by removing and manually cleaning the valve, some garages do one, some do both.

For vehicles with mild carbon buildup, a good clean is often all that is needed.

Why cleaning sometimes is not enough

The honest truth about EGR cleaning is this: it treats the symptom, not the cause. The EGR system will always produce carbon buildup. On high-mileage diesel cars and vans, particularly those used for short runs or urban stop-start driving, the valve often blocks again within months.

If you have already had your EGR cleaned once and the fault has returned, you are not looking at a one-off fix. You are looking at a recurring cost every time carbon builds back up.

That is where our service comes in.

The permanent solution: ECU delete

We are The EGR Specialist, operating across Greater Manchester and within a 40-mile radius of Eccles. Our service is a software-based ECU remap that removes the EGR from your vehicle's engine management entirely. No physical dismantling. No workshop visit. We come to you.

Please note: EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. It is not legal for use on public roads and must not be used on vehicles driven on the public highway.

For vehicles that qualify, the delete is a permanent fix. Once the ECU is remapped, the engine management no longer monitors or drives the EGR valve. Carbon buildup in the valve itself becomes irrelevant because the system is no longer in the loop. No more fault codes. No more limp mode. No more repeat cleaning bills.

Frequently asked questions

Does EGR cleaning work?
It can, yes. If the valve is sticky or sluggish due to a moderate amount of carbon buildup, a thorough clean will often clear the fault and restore normal running. The caveat is that the underlying cause, exhaust soot passing through the EGR circuit, does not go away. On higher-mileage diesels or vehicles used for a lot of short trips, the valve tends to block again within a year or two. Cleaning works best as a first-line fix on newer or lower-mileage vehicles.
How often does an EGR valve need cleaning?
There is no fixed interval. It depends on how the vehicle is driven, the engine's condition, and the quality of the fuel it runs on. As a rough guide, high-mileage diesels used mainly in town can see EGR problems within 12 to 18 months of a clean. Vehicles that regularly do longer motorway runs tend to foul up more slowly. If your EGR has been cleaned more than once, that pattern is a strong signal that cleaning alone is not a long-term answer.
How much does EGR cleaning cost?
EGR cleaning costs vary depending on whether the garage uses a chemical cleaner applied through the inlet, or removes and manually cleans the valve. Chemical treatments typically start around £50 to £100. A full removal and clean can range from £150 to £300 or more depending on the vehicle and the labour involved. Our ECU delete is from £220 and is a one-time cost with no repeat visits. See our EGR cleaning cost page for a fuller breakdown.
What is the difference between EGR cleaning and EGR delete?
EGR cleaning removes the carbon deposits from inside the valve and surrounding passages to restore normal operation. It is a physical process and needs repeating as deposits return. EGR delete is a software modification to the engine control unit (ECU) that removes the EGR from the vehicle's engine management. The system is no longer activated, so carbon buildup in the valve stops being an issue. The key distinction: cleaning is a maintenance solution; delete is a permanent one. Delete is for off-road and track use only and must not be used on vehicles driven on public roads.
