What affects the cost of EGR cleaning?
There are two main approaches, and the price difference between them is significant.
Chemical or spray cleaning is the cheaper option. A technician feeds a cleaning agent through the intake manifold without removing the valve. It takes less time and costs less labour, expect to pay roughly £80 to £120 for this.
Physical removal and strip soak is more thorough. The valve is taken off the engine, disassembled where possible, and soaked in a cleaning solution to break down carbon deposits. This is more time-consuming and usually costs £120 to £200, sometimes more on larger or more complex engines where access is awkward.
Neither method is a permanent fix. On high-mileage diesel vehicles, carbon build-up is an ongoing issue. Many owners find themselves back at the garage every 12 to 18 months.
Is there a more cost-effective alternative?
