The replacement bill on a Volvo

Volvo's diesel range splits into two generations, and the bill depends on which one is fitted. The older D5 and D4 2.4 five-cylinder, in the XC90 Mk1 and the XC60 Mk1's early years, has a cooler buried in a longer engine bay, so dealer labour to reach it runs £100 to £140 an hour against £60 to £100 at an independent, and a valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted. Where the cooler has gone as well on a high-mileage five-cylinder, parts and labour together push higher. The newer VEA 2.0 four-cylinder in the V90, XC60 Mk2 and XC90 Mk2 is more compact to work on but still carries the same £300 to £700 valve range.

Then the new part goes back into the same short, cold-start commute that fouled the first one. It fails the same way, and the second bill sits with the owner.

Clean, replace or delete

| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted; cooler jobs above that | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |

Read the table honestly. A V90 or XC60 used on the road should be cleaned, because cleaning is legal and works on a valve that is fouled rather than broken. Replacement is the right call when a valve or cooler has physically failed on a road car. The delete is for the off-road-registered XC90 or the track-day estate whose owner is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.

Volvo models and engines

The D5 and D4 five-cylinder and the newer VEA four-cylinder have different EGR records, and the badge alone does not confirm which one is fitted: D3, D4 and D5 have all been used across both engine families at different times, so we check the reg rather than the badge on the boot.

V90 (2016 to 2022), D3, D4 and D5 2.0 VEA. The four-cylinder's valve and cooler foul with age. Volvo's 2019 recall on these engines concerned the intake manifold, not the EGR system, so it is a separate fault and not something the delete addresses. See Volvo V90 EGR delete.

XC60 (Mk1 2008 to 2017, Mk2 2017 onward), 2.4 D5, D4 and D3 five-cylinder to 2015, 2.0 VEA D4 2014 to 2017 on the Mk1; 2.0 VEA D4 and D5 to about 2022 on the Mk2. The five-cylinder's cooler is a well-documented failure on the early cars; the VEA carries the same valve and cooler pattern in a smaller unit. See Volvo XC60 EGR delete.

XC90 (Mk1 2002 to 2014, Mk2 2015 onward), 2.4 D5 five-cylinder on the Mk1; 2.0 VEA D5 to about 2022 on the Mk2. The Mk1's five-cylinder cooler is the same buried, expensive job as the early XC60; the Mk2's VEA is smaller and cheaper to reach but fails the same way. See Volvo XC90 EGR delete.

S60, V60, S80 and V70, D5, D4 and D3. The saloon and estate range on the same two engine families. No model page yet; we confirm from the reg.

Every engine above is £220. If yours is not listed, call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will check it.

What happens on the day

We come to the vehicle, at home, at work or at the track. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and nothing comes off the engine. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Cost questions on the Volvo

Why is £220 cheaper than a new EGR valve on a Volvo?
Because nothing is bought and nothing is removed. No valve, no cooler, no gaskets, no coolant, no labour hours reaching a five-cylinder cooler, and no dealer overhead built into the price. The delete is a software change written through the OBD port, with the car parked where you left it.
Should I try an EGR clean on my Volvo first?
Yes, if the car is used on the road. Cleaning is road-legal and the right first step. On a V90 or XC60 with a fouled VEA valve it often holds the fault off for months. The delete is for off-road and track vehicles only, where the owner has decided the EGR bills end here.
Is it worth deleting the EGR on a high-mileage Volvo?
On an off-road or track vehicle, yes, and the mileage is the argument. An XC90 at 120,000 miles has a valve and cooler that have spent those miles in soot, and a replacement would go the same way in the same use. £220 once takes the fault out of the software. We read the codes first and tell you if the vehicle needs something else.
Is the price the same for every Volvo engine?
Yes. £220 whichever engine: D5 and D4 2.4 five-cylinder or 2.0 VEA. V90, XC60 or XC90. No surcharge for the newer VEA units, and no call-out charge for coming to you anywhere within our 40-mile radius of Eccles.
