The fault, and what it means
The EGR warning tends to make itself known gradually at first, a rough idle on a cold start, a hesitation when pulling away, a hint of black smoke under load that wasn't there six months ago. Then limp mode cuts in. Power drops sharply, the RPM ceiling falls, and the vehicle is no longer functioning the way it needs to. The ECU has decided the EGR fault is serious enough to restrict the engine in order to protect it.
The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature. Limp mode caused by the EGR fault resolves once the codes are cleared and the ECU is no longer trying to manage a failing valve. The modification is permanent. EGR removal and EGR delete are the same service, same remap, same outcome, regardless of which term was searched. Around 60 to 90 minutes at the customer's location.
