What the EGR system does, and why it fails

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve takes a controlled portion of exhaust gas and routes it back into the intake manifold. The engineering intent is to reduce peak combustion temperature and cut NOx emissions. In theory, a functioning EGR system manages this cleanly. In practice, on a diesel engine doing urban routes, stop-start work, and short runs, which describes the majority of commercial vehicles operating around Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton, and the wider motorway network, the recirculated exhaust gas carries a heavy carbon load. The engine does not reach the sustained temperatures needed to burn those deposits off. The valve passages accumulate soot. The valve itself fouls, sticks, or fails to reach the ECU's target position.

When the ECU detects the EGR circuit is not performing within its mapped parameters, it logs a fault code and triggers a reduction in engine output, limp mode, to protect the drivetrain from running in an uncontrolled state.

A software EGR delete removes the EGR system from the ECU's operating map entirely. The ECU stops commanding the valve. The fault code stops returning. The engine runs without the EGR cycle. The valve remains physically in place, nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no surrounding components are disturbed. The modification is carried out through the OBD diagnostic port.

Vehicle coverage

We carry out software EGR deletes on a wide range of diesel vans and cars. Commonly covered vehicles include:

Ford Transit (TDCi and EcoBlue), Mercedes Sprinter (CDI), Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6 (TDI), Volkswagen Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, Fiat Ducato, and diesel passenger cars across most manufacturers.

Coverage is subject to tuning file availability for your specific make, model, engine variant, and year. Not every build is covered, if you have an unusual spec or a less common engine code, call us on 0161 694 7331 with the details before booking. We will check availability and give you a straight answer.

What happens on the day, step by step

We arrive at your location in Rochdale, home address, yard, industrial unit, or car park.

Pre-remap diagnostic

we connect to the OBD port and read all current fault codes, logging everything present.

ECU remap

the modified map is written via the OBD port with the EGR system disabled in software. The engine bay is not opened.

Verification

we confirm the map has been correctly written, restart the engine, and check all systems are reading as expected.

Fault codes cleared

stored EGR codes are removed. Any non-EGR faults present will be reported to you but require separate attention.

Done, typically 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to completion.

No recovery, no overnight, no garage slot.

Cost and comparison

The EGR delete is £220. That covers the visit, the remap, the verification, and fault code clearance. There is no diagnostic charge on top, no call-out fee, and no per-hour rate. If the DPF also needs to be addressed, both can be done in the same visit for £445.

For context: a physical EGR valve replacement typically costs £300 to £700 fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether corroded components complicate the job. For a diesel doing the short-run, stop-start work that causes EGR fouling in the first place, a replacement valve will accumulate the same deposits under the same conditions. The software delete removes the system from the equation permanently. One visit. No repeat work.

FAQs

What if the fault is a hardware failure rather than a software issue?
If the EGR valve has physically seized, fractured, or caused damage to surrounding components, the software delete will still disable the system in the ECU, the ECU will stop commanding the valve and stop logging EGR fault codes. It will not repair mechanical damage. If there is secondary damage caused by a failed valve, for example, intake deposits blocking the manifold, that will need physical attention regardless of whether the EGR is deleted in software.
How is a software EGR delete different from fitting a blanking plate?
A blanking plate physically blocks the EGR passage in the intake manifold. It requires dismantling components, risks disturbing corroded fixings, and often leaves the ECU still trying to command the valve, resulting in fault codes unless the ECU is also remapped. A software delete works at the ECU level only. Nothing is opened, nothing is blocked physically, and the ECU is mapped so that it no longer expects EGR valve feedback. It is a cleaner approach with no mechanical risk.
Can you remap a vehicle that has already had an EGR valve replaced?
Yes. Whether the vehicle has its original EGR valve, a replacement part, or a recently cleaned valve makes no difference to the remap process. The modification is applied to the ECU, it does not depend on the physical state of the valve. If the vehicle has a replacement valve that is already beginning to foul again, the software delete will prevent the same fault pattern recurring.
What happens if the ECU will not communicate?
Before the session starts, we connect to the OBD port and confirm communication with the ECU. If communication cannot be established, due to a wiring fault, a damaged OBD port, or an incompatible ECU build, we will tell you before attempting the remap. In that case, the remap cannot proceed and we will advise on what needs to be resolved first. Call 0161 694 7331 with your vehicle details if you have any concerns about ECU compatibility before booking.
