What the EGR system does and why it fails on diesels
The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a controlled portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The engineering purpose is to reduce peak combustion temperature and cut NOx output. On a diesel doing mixed motorway work, the system can function tolerably. On a diesel doing the kind of work common around Stalybridge, stop-start runs through Ashton-under-Lyne, short hauls through Millbrook, deliveries up and down the motorway corridor, site visits into the Tame Valley, the carbon load in the recirculated exhaust gas builds up faster than the heat generated by that kind of driving can clear it.
The valve fouls. Intake passages accumulate deposits. The ECU detects that the EGR circuit is not operating within its expected parameters, logs a fault code, and reduces engine output to protect the drivetrain. Limp mode follows.
A software delete removes the EGR system from the ECU's operating map entirely. The valve remains physically in place, nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no surrounding components are disturbed. The ECU stops commanding the valve, the fault code stops returning, and the engine runs without the EGR cycle.
Vehicle coverage
We carry out software EGR deletes on a wide range of diesel commercial vehicles and cars. Commonly covered vehicles include the Ford Transit (TDCi and EcoBlue), Mercedes Sprinter (CDI), Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6 (TDI), Volkswagen Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, Fiat Ducato, and diesel passenger cars across most manufacturers and engine families.
Coverage is subject to tuning file availability for your specific make, model, engine variant, and year. Not every combination is covered, if you have an unusual spec or a less common engine code, call 0161 694 7331 with the details before booking. We confirm availability before you commit.
What happens on the day, step by step
We arrive at your location in Stalybridge, home address, yard, industrial unit, or car park.
Pre-remap diagnostic
we connect to the OBD port and read all current fault codes, logging everything present before any modification is made.
ECU remap
the modified map is written via OBD port with the EGR system removed from the engine's operating parameters. The engine bay is not opened.
Verification
the engine is restarted and the map is confirmed as correctly written, with all systems reading as expected.
Fault codes cleared
EGR-related codes are removed before we leave. Non-EGR faults will be reported to you separately.
Done, typically 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to completion.
No recovery, no garage slot, no overnight.
Cost and comparison
The EGR delete is £220. That covers the visit, the remap, and the verification. No diagnostic charge, no call-out fee, no per-hour rate on top. If the DPF also needs to be addressed, both can be handled in the same visit for £445.
A physical EGR valve replacement on a diesel typically costs £300 to £700 fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether corrosion around the fixings adds labour time. For a van doing the stop-start, short-run work that causes EGR carbon build-up in the first place, a replacement valve operates under the same conditions as the one it replaced. The software delete removes the system from the equation permanently. One visit. No repeat work. No third valve on the horizon.
Legal notice
EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. A vehicle fitted with an EGR delete does not comply with current UK road emissions requirements and must not be used on public roads following this modification. This removes part of the vehicle's original emissions control system from the engine management map. The owner is responsible for understanding the legal position and ensuring the vehicle is used only in contexts where this modification is legally permitted.
