The cost of keeping an EGR valve running

An EGR valve replacement is typically a £300-£700 job fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether there are complications with corroded fixings or surrounding components. That assumes it is a straightforward job. On older vans or high-mileage diesel cars, it rarely is.

For vehicles that have already been through one replacement, or two, the pattern becomes expensive. Add in the cleaning intervals in between, every 20,000-40,000 miles for vehicles doing stop-start urban work, and the cumulative cost of managing a failing EGR system adds up steadily.

A software EGR delete costs £220. One visit. The valve is disabled in the ECU permanently. There are no parts to order, no repeat cleaning schedules, no second replacement in two years' time. The comparison is straightforward, and the maths does not need dressing up.

This is not the right solution for every situation. If your vehicle needs to remain road-legal under current UK emissions requirements, cleaning or replacement is the on-road legal route. But for off-road and track use, the delete is a one-time resolution.

What a software EGR delete actually is

The delete is an ECU remap, not a mechanical procedure. We connect to the vehicle's OBD port, read the existing map, write a modified version with the EGR cycle removed from the engine's operating parameters, and disconnect. The EGR valve stays physically in place, nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no surrounding components are disturbed.

Once the remap is written, the ECU no longer commands the EGR valve. Fault codes associated with EGR circuit performance are cleared. Limp mode caused by EGR faults does not return. The modification is permanent unless deliberately reversed.

Compare this with physical EGR removal: that involves unbolting the valve, fitting a blanking plate, disturbing gaskets and fixings that are often heavily corroded on older vehicles. The software route carries none of that risk or complication.

If a DPF delete is also needed, both can be handled in the same visit. Call to discuss.

Which vehicles can we work on?

We work on a wide range of diesel vans and cars. Common vehicles covered include:

Vans: Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter and Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, Fiat Ducato.

Diesel cars: A broad range of diesel cars across most manufacturers.

Compatibility is subject to available tuning files for your specific make, model, engine, and year. If you are unsure whether your vehicle is covered, call 0161 694 7331 before booking. We would rather confirm it over the phone than have you book and find out on the day.

We also carry out EGR delete alongside DPF delete in a single visit at £445 for the combined remap, if both systems need addressing.

Local context: Droylsden and Tameside

Droylsden sits on a main road corridor between Manchester city centre and Ashton-under-Lyne, about five miles east of the city. It is a working route, the kind of road that sees consistent stop-start traffic at peak times, with delivery runs, trade vehicles, and commuter diesels all sharing the same stretch.

Vehicles doing repeated short runs into Manchester, or the regular industrial estate routes around the Ashton Moss and Snipe Retail areas, accumulate carbon deposits in the EGR system faster than vehicles doing longer motorway runs. The driving pattern is exactly the kind that causes premature EGR fouling.

We cover Droylsden as part of our Tameside service area. Travel from Eccles is straightforward.

FAQs

Is there a call-out charge on top of the £220?
No. £220 covers the visit, the remap, and the verification. There is no separate call-out fee, no diagnostic charge, and no per-hour rate. If travel to your location in Droylsden is outside our standard coverage area we will tell you before you book, but Droylsden is well within our usual range.
Can you do the EGR delete and a DPF delete in one visit?
Yes. If both systems need addressing, we can carry out both remaps in the same visit. The combined price is £445 and covers the EGR delete and the DPF delete together. Call 0161 694 7331 to discuss your vehicle and confirm what is needed.
Which vehicles can you remap?
We work across a wide range of diesel vans and cars, including Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter and Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, and Fiat Ducato, as well as diesel cars across most major manufacturers. Compatibility depends on available tuning files for your specific vehicle. Call with your make, model, engine, and year and we can confirm before you book.
How long does the job take?
Typically 60-90 minutes from arrival to completion. That includes the pre-remap code read, writing the modified map, verifying the result, and clearing stored fault codes. The vehicle does not need to go to a garage and does not need to be recovered, it is driven away on the same day.
