SERVICE EXPLAINER

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a controlled portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The purpose is to reduce combustion temperature and lower NOx output. On a diesel doing mixed motorway work, the system can function tolerably over time. On a diesel operating on urban routes, short runs, and regular idling, common for vehicles working in and around Cheadle, the carbon load carried in the recirculated exhaust gas builds up faster than normal operating temperatures can clear it.

The valve fouls. The intake passages accumulate deposits. The ECU detects that the EGR circuit is not performing within its specified parameters, logs a fault code, and reduces engine output to protect the drivetrain. The engine enters limp mode.

A software delete removes the EGR system from the ECU's operating map entirely. We connect via the OBD port and write a modified map that stops the ECU from commanding the EGR valve. The valve stays physically in place, no blanking plates, no unbolting, no disturbing corroded fixings, no gaskets. The engine runs without the EGR cycle, and the fault codes are cleared at the end of the visit.

VEHICLE TYPES

We cover a wide range of diesel commercial vehicles and cars. On the van side, this includes the Ford Transit (both TDCi and EcoBlue engine variants), Mercedes Sprinter (CDI), Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6 (TDI), Volkswagen Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, and Fiat Ducato. We also carry out EGR deletes on diesel cars across a range of makes and models.

Compatibility depends on available tuning files for the specific vehicle, engine family, and year. Not every variant is covered. If you are unsure, call 0161 694 7331 with your make, model, engine size, and registration year before booking.

MOBILE PROCESS

We arrive at your location, home, workplace, yard, or car park in or around Cheadle.

Pre-remap diagnostic, we read and log all current fault codes before any work begins.

ECU remap, we write the modified map via the OBD port.

The EGR system is disabled in software. No engine bay access required.

Verification, the map is confirmed written correctly.

The engine is restarted and checked.

Fault codes cleared, all EGR-related codes are cleared from the system.

Done, typical duration is 60–90 minutes from arrival to completion.

COST COMPARISON

The £220 covers the visit, the remap, and the verification. There is no call-out charge, no diagnostic fee, and no per-hour billing.

For context, a physical EGR valve replacement typically costs £300–£600 fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether there are complications from corrosion or surrounding components. A valve replaced under those conditions will foul again under the same driving pattern, cleaning cycles in between add further cost without changing the underlying outcome.

If you also want the DPF deleted in the same visit, the combined EGR and DPF delete is £445.

FAQs

What if the fault is a hardware failure rather than a software issue?
A software delete removes the EGR system from the ECU map regardless of the valve's physical condition. If the valve itself has mechanically failed, the delete will clear the associated fault codes and prevent the ECU from commanding the faulty component. It does not repair the hardware, but it does mean the hardware failure no longer triggers fault codes or limp mode.
How is a software EGR delete different from fitting a blanking plate?
A blanking plate physically blocks the EGR port to stop exhaust gas from entering the intake. It requires opening the engine bay and disturbing components that are often corroded on high-mileage vehicles. A software delete achieves the same functional outcome, the EGR cycle does not run, without any physical work on the engine. Nothing is unbolted, nothing is sealed off, and there is no risk from disturbing corroded fixings.
Can you remap a vehicle that has already had an EGR valve replaced?
Yes. The physical condition of the valve makes no difference to the software modification. Whether the valve is original, recently replaced, or currently faulty, the remap removes the EGR system from the ECU's operating parameters.
What happens if the ECU will not communicate?
In most cases, communication issues can be diagnosed on arrival. If the OBD port is damaged or a deeper fault is preventing ECU access, we will advise on the situation before any charge is applied. We do not carry out work we cannot verify.
