The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake to reduce combustion temperatures and cut NOx emissions. In theory, it works. In practice, on a diesel that does a lot of short journeys or town driving, the valve and the surrounding intake passages accumulate carbon deposits faster than most owners expect.

The result is familiar: rough idle, black smoke, loss of power, limp mode, and an EGR fault code on the dashboard. If the valve sticks open or closed, the engine management system throws a fault and dials back performance to protect the engine.

Cleaning buys time. Replacement resets the clock. Neither changes the underlying conditions that cause the problem.
