The BMW 3 Series is the most common vehicle we see for EGR work, and it is easy to see why. The N47 diesel engine fitted to E90 and F30 318d and 320d models is well-known for EGR valve failure, particularly once mileage climbs past 100,000. Left unresolved, a failed EGR valve drags the car into limp mode, ruins fuel economy and shortens engine life.

Which BMW 3 Series engines do we cover?

N47 engine (E90 and F30, 318d, 320d)

The N47 is the engine we work on most. EGR valve sticking and EGR cooler failure are both common faults on this unit. High-mileage examples suffer most, the EGR cooler in particular tends to crack after sustained motorway use, leading to coolant loss and white smoke from the exhaust. ECU delete removes the fault at source.

B47 engine (F30 and G20, 318d, 320d)

The B47 replaced the N47 from around 2014 onward. It is a more modern engine but shares many of the same EGR weaknesses. EGR valve fouling and sensor faults are the most common complaints we see on B47-equipped 3 Series.

N57 and B57 engines (330d, 335d)

The six-cylinder diesel 3 Series is less commonly affected but not immune. EGR cooler failure on the N57 can cause significant damage if ignored. If your 330d or 335d is showing EGR codes, we can remap it on the same visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is EGR delete legal on a road car?

No. EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. The service is not compliant with road emissions legislation. By booking, you confirm the vehicle will not be used on public roads.

Do I need to physically remove the EGR valve?

No. Our delete is software-only, carried out through the OBD port. The EGR valve and cooler remain in place. The ECU is remapped so the engine management system no longer operates the EGR at all.

Will it clear the engine management light?

Yes. Once the remap is complete we clear any stored EGR fault codes. As long as no unrelated faults are present, the warning light will go off.

Does it work on automatic and manual gearboxes?

Yes. The EGR remap is independent of gearbox type.

Can you do a 330d at the same time as a standard 320d?

Yes. We cover the full diesel 3 Series range in a single visit if you have multiple vehicles at the same location.
