The replacement bill on an X3

On an X3 the valve is rarely the whole story. Across the F25 and G01 20d, and the 30d and 35d six-cylinders, the part that fails is usually the EGR cooler, the same component behind BMW's 2018 recall across its four- and six-cylinder diesels. Cars in scope were done at BMW's cost. Cars outside it, and cars whose replacement cooler has since gone the same way, are done at yours. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent. The cooler is another matter: it sits deeper in the engine bay than the valve, and the hours to reach it are the bill. At £60 to £100 an hour at an independent it is a long morning; at £100 to £140 at a dealer, with BMW parts, gaskets and coolant, a six-cylinder cooler job runs into four figures.

The new cooler then goes back into the same school run and town traffic that fouled the first one. When it fails again, the bill is yours, at the same rates.

Clean, replace or delete

| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |

The honest reading: an X3 used on the road should be cleaned, not deleted. Cleaning is legal, it is the cheapest line, and on a valve with a light build-up it works. Replacement is right when a valve has physically failed on a road car, or when a cooler is leaking on one. The delete is for the off-road or track X3 whose owner is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.

X3 engines covered

X3 E83 2.0d and 3.0d, 2004 to 2010

The 2.0d ran the M47 until 2007 and the N47 after it; the 3.0d is the M57. Older cars, cheaper valves, and coolers that fail on high-mileage examples.

X3 F25 20d, 30d and 35d, 2010 to 2017

The 20d ran the N47 until 2014 and the B47 after it; the 30d and 35d are the N57 six-cylinder. These are the recall-era engines, and the cooler is the expensive part on all three. The N47's timing chain is a separate fault and not one the delete touches.

X3 G01 20d and 30d, 2017 onward

B47 four-cylinder and B57 six-cylinder. Later B47s add a low-pressure EGR loop, so there are two valves and two coolers to foul. Newer, shorter record, same remap.

What happens on the day

We come to the X3: home, work, a unit, a car park. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and the car does not go anywhere. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Cost questions on the X3

Why is £220 cheaper than a new EGR valve on an X3?
Because nothing is bought and nothing comes off. No valve, no cooler, no gaskets, no coolant, no hours spent reaching a cooler at the back of the engine, and no garage overhead built into the price. The delete is a change to the ECU's software, written through the OBD port with the car parked where it is.
Should I try an EGR clean on my X3 first?
Yes, if the car is used on the road. Cleaning is road-legal and the right first step, and on an X3 with a fouled valve rather than a leaking cooler it can hold the fault off for a year or more. The delete is for off-road and track cars only, where the owner has decided the bills stop here.
Is it worth deleting the EGR on a high-mileage X3?
On an off-road or track car, the mileage is the argument for it. A 120,000-mile X3 has a cooler that has spent a decade in hot exhaust gas, and a replacement would go the same way in the same use. £220 once takes the fault out of the software for good. We read the codes first and say if the car needs something else.
Is the price the same for every X3 engine?
Yes. £220 whichever engine: 2.0d, 20d, 3.0d, 30d or 35d, four-cylinder or six. No surcharge for the M Sport, the all-wheel versions or the newer ECUs, and no call-out charge for coming to you anywhere within our 40-mile radius of Eccles.

Get a fixed price for your X3: it is £220, whichever engine.

Call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will confirm the ECU type and a time. No call-out charge, no diagnostic fee, no strip-down, and the car stays at your address. For off-road and track use only.
