Which engine is in your X6

Three generations, three six-cylinder diesel families, one recurring fault. The badge and the year tell you which engine you have.

| Engine | X6 generation | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | M57 3.0d twin turbo, 35d | E71 | 2008 to 2010 | Cooler failure on high-mileage cars; valve sticking | | N57 3.0d, 30d and 40d | E71 | 2008 to 2014 | Cooler leaks with coolant loss; the recall-era engine | | N57 3.0d, 30d, 40d and M50d | F16 | 2014 to 2019 | Same cooler leaks across all three outputs | | B57 3.0d, 30d, 40d and M50d | G06 | 2019 onward | Cooler leaks; newer engine with a shorter record |

The X6 shares all three engines with the X5, which sits on the same platform in every generation. The E71 launched with the M57 twin-turbo in the 35d and moved to the N57 for the 40d; the 30d is the single-turbo N57. The F16 kept the N57 across the 30d, 40d and M50d, and those are the build years covered by BMW's 2018 EGR cooler recall and its later extensions. The G06 moved to the B57, a newer design with the same cooler-led fault so far. In every case the cooler is a water-cooled heat exchanger in the exhaust gas path, and with heat and age it cracks and lets coolant into the intake. One remap covers all four rows.

How the delete is done on the X6

You call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and the badge.

We confirm the ECU type before we set off, so the right file is ready.

We arrive at your location

home, workplace, yard or car park, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.

Pre-remap read of every stored fault code, EGR and otherwise, so we know what the car is reporting before anything changes.

ECU file read at the OBD port and the EGR delete written into it.

The valve and cooler stay on the engine and stop being commanded.

Engine restarted and live data checked

EGR position, air mass, coolant temperature, boost.

Codes cleared, done.

Typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the X6 does not go anywhere.

Delete versus replacement on the X6

Replacement on an X6 is a cooler job more often than a valve job. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent. The six-cylinder cooler is the expensive one: it sits deeper in the engine bay than the valve, and the hours to reach it at £60 to £100 an hour at an independent, or £100 to £140 at a dealer with BMW parts, gaskets and coolant, take a dealer job into four figures. An EGR clean is £80 to £200 and buys months.

The software delete is £220, once, for any of the three engines. DPF and EGR delete in the same visit, £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Off-road and track use

The X6 EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. A vehicle with the EGR removed from its software no longer meets the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and it is the owner's responsibility to keep the car to the use it is sold for. There is no road-use version of this service; for a road car, an EGR clean is the legal route.

X6 engine questions

Which engine is in my X6, and how do I check?
The V5C has an engine code field, the tailgate badge reads 30d, 35d, 40d or M50d, and the year narrows it further: 35d is the M57, 30d and 40d up to 2019 are N57, and anything from the G06 onward is B57. If in doubt, send us the reg and we will confirm.
Does the delete cover both the high-pressure and low-pressure EGR on the newer X6 engines?
Where a G06 B57 has a second, low-pressure loop as well as the high-pressure one:. We confirm the exact scope of the delete for your engine when you call with the reg, before the visit is booked, so you know what is covered.
Is the X6 done through the OBD port, or does the ECU have to come out?
OBD in most cases. We confirm the ECU type from your reg before we set off, so if a particular ECU needs a different approach you hear about it on the phone, not on the day. Nothing is unbolted from the car in the normal course of an X6 visit.
Does the delete change the power or fuelling on the X6?
No. The delete targets the EGR maps only. Fuelling, boost and torque limits are left as BMW set them, so a 40d or M50d puts out what it always did. It is not a performance remap, and we do not sell it as one.

Book your X6 EGR delete: call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will confirm the engine and a time.

£220, mobile, 60 to 90 minutes on site, no call-out charge anywhere within our 40-mile radius of Eccles, and the car stays where it is. For off-road and track use only.
