Which engine is in your Touareg

Three generations, five engine families, and one of them accounts for nearly every Touareg EGR call we get. Which one is in yours decides whether the weak point is a bolt-on valve or a cooler buried under the intake manifold.

| Engine | Touareg | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | 2.5 TDI five-cylinder | 7L | 2003 to 2010 | Valve sticks with carbon; cooler faults with age | | 3.0 V6 TDI, EA896 | 7L | 2004 to 2010 | Cooler failure with coolant loss; valve and throttle fouling | | 5.0 V10 TDI | 7L | 2002 to 2010 | Record thin | | 3.0 V6 TDI, EA897 | 7P | 2010 to 2018 | Cooler failure under the intake; valve fouling | | 4.2 V8 TDI | 7P | 2010 to 2018 | Record thin | | 3.0 V6 TDI, EA897 evo | CR | 2018 onward | High-pressure and low-pressure EGR; valve and cooler fouling on both loops | | 4.0 V8 TDI | CR | 2019 to 2020 | Record thin |

7L: 2.5 TDI, 3.0 V6 TDI and V10 TDI

The 2.5 is the Transporter T5 and Crafter Mk1 five-cylinder, and its valve goes the same way in all three. The V6 is the early EA896, the first of the cooler failures. The V10's EGR record is too thin to describe with confidence.

7P: 3.0 V6 TDI EA897 and 4.2 V8 TDI

The V6 that most UK Touaregs carry, shared with the Porsche Cayenne 958 and the Audi Q7, and it fails the same way in all three: cooler first, coolant going missing with no puddle, and the cooler sits in the valley of the engine under the intake.

CR: 3.0 V6 TDI EA897 evo and 4.0 V8 TDI

Euro 6 with a low-pressure loop alongside the high-pressure valve, so two circuits to foul. Newer, shorter record, same remap.

How the delete is done on the Touareg

You call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and the engine.

We confirm the ECU type before we set off.

We come to the car, at your home, workplace or estate yard, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.

Before anything is written we read every stored code and note the live EGR readings, so we know what we are dealing with.

We read the ECU file at the OBD port, write the EGR delete into it and load it back.

The engine is restarted and the live data checked: no EGR command, no flow check, no fault flagged.

Codes cleared, done.

Typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the Touareg does not leave where it is parked.

Delete versus replacement on the Touareg

An EGR clean on the 2.5 is £80 to £200 and buys a few months if the fault is a fouled valve, and a new valve is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent. On the V6 the valve is rarely the whole story. The cooler is the usual failure, and it sits under the intake manifold, so reaching it means stripping the top of the engine. The hours are the bill: £60 to £100 an hour at an independent, £100 to £140 at a dealer, and a dealer cooler job on an EA897 runs into four figures. The V8s are further to strip again. Then the new cooler goes back into the same towing and town use that cracked the old one.

The software delete is £220, once. If the DPF is blocking as well, the DPF and EGR delete in the same visit is £445; the DPF and EGR delete page explains what that covers.

Off-road and track use

The delete is for off-road and track use only. A Touareg with the EGR removed from its software does not meet the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and the owner is responsible for how the vehicle is used after the work. A fair share of Touaregs in the North West tow horseboxes and work on farms and private estates, and that is the use this service is sold for.

Touareg engine questions

Which engine is in my Touareg, and how do I check?
Three ways. The engine code field on the V5C, the badge on the tailgate or the engine cover, or the year: a 2003 to 2010 car is a 7L on the 2.5, the early V6 or the V10, a 2010 to 2018 car is a 7P on the EA897 V6 or the 4.2 V8, and a 2018 onward car is a CR. Easiest of all, send us the reg and we will tell you.
Does the delete cover both the high-pressure and low-pressure EGR on the newer Touareg engines?
The CR's EA897 evo runs a low-pressure loop alongside the high-pressure valve, and some late 7P cars may too. How the delete handles the low-pressure circuit on your car is something we confirm from the ECU file rather than assume.
Is the Touareg done through the OBD port, or does the ECU have to come out?
Through the OBD port in most cases. The Bosch ECUs across all three generations can be read and written in place, so there is no strip-down and nothing leaves the car. We confirm the ECU type from your reg before we set off, so if yours is an exception you will know before we arrive, not on the day.
Does the delete change the power or fuelling on the Touareg?
No. The delete targets the EGR maps only. Fuelling, boost and torque limits are left exactly as VW set them, so the car tows as it did when it was new, with the EGR fault gone. It is not a performance remap and we do not sell it as one.

Book your Touareg EGR delete: call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will confirm the engine and a time.

It is £220, we come to you, and the job takes 60 to 90 minutes on site with nothing removed from the car. See VW EGR delete for the rest of the range.
