Which engine is in your Cayenne

Two generations of diesel Cayenne, two engines, and both of them are VW Group units under a Porsche cover. Which one is in yours decides where the cooler sits and what it costs to reach.

| Engine | Cayenne | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | 3.0 V6 TDI, 240 PS | 957 | 2009 to 2010 | Cooler failure with coolant loss; valve and throttle fouling | | 3.0 V6 TDI, 245 to 262 PS, EA897 from about 2011 | 958 | 2010 to 2018 | Same cooler and valve faults; low-pressure EGR on the later Euro 6 versions | | 4.2 V8 TDI, 382 PS, S Diesel | 958 | 2013 to 2016 | Record thin at model level |

The 3.0 V6 is the engine in nearly every diesel Cayenne on the road, and it is the same unit Audi fitted to the Q7 and VW to the Touareg in those years. It fails the same way in all three: the EGR cooler sits in the valley of the V6, cracks internally with age and mileage, and coolant seeps into the intake with no leak to find. The valve and intake throttle foul with carbon on cars that do short runs. The 4.2 V8 in the S Diesel is the Q7 and A8 V8, with a shorter record and the same remap.

How the delete is done on the Cayenne

You call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and the engine.

We confirm the ECU type before we set off.

We come to the car, at your home, workplace or storage, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.

Before anything is written we read every stored code and note the live EGR readings, so we know what we are dealing with.

We read the ECU file at the OBD port, write the EGR delete into it and load it back.

The engine is restarted and the live data checked: no EGR command, no flow check, no fault flagged.

Codes cleared, done.

Typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the car does not leave where it is parked.

Delete versus replacement on the Cayenne

An EGR clean on the V6 is £80 to £200 and buys a few months if the fault is a fouled valve rather than a cracked cooler. A new valve is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent. The cooler is the usual failure on the 3.0 TDI, and it sits in the valley of the engine under the intake manifold, so the labour to reach it dominates the bill, at £60 to £100 an hour independent or £100 to £140 at a Porsche centre; parts and labour together run well above the valve figure. Then the new cooler goes back into the same school-run and short-commute use that cracked the old one.

The software delete is £220, once. If the DPF is blocking as well, the DPF and EGR delete in the same visit is £445; the DPF and EGR delete page explains what that covers.

Off-road and track use

The delete is for off-road and track use only. A Cayenne with the EGR removed from its software does not meet the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and the owner is responsible for how the vehicle is used after the work. Cayennes used on private estates, farm tracks and track days are the vehicles the service exists for.

Cayenne engine questions

Which engine is in my Cayenne, and how do I check?
Three ways. The engine code field on the V5C, the badge on the engine cover, or the tailgate: “Diesel” is the 3.0 V6 and “S Diesel” is the 4.2 V8. The 957 and 958 are told apart by the shape of the lights and the registration year. Easiest of all, send us the reg and we will tell you.
Does the delete cover both the high-pressure and low-pressure EGR on the newer Cayenne engines?
The later Euro 6 versions of the 958's 3.0 V6 may run a low-pressure loop alongside the high-pressure valve. Whether yours does, and how the delete handles it, is something we confirm from the ECU file rather than assume.
Is the Cayenne done through the OBD port, or does the ECU have to come out?
Through the OBD port in most cases. The V6 and V8 Cayenne ECUs are units we can read and write in place, so there is no strip-down and nothing leaves the car. We confirm the ECU type from your reg before we set off, so if yours is an exception you will know before we arrive, not on the day.
Does the delete change the power or fuelling on the Cayenne?
No. The delete targets the EGR maps only. Fuelling, boost and torque limits are left exactly as Porsche set them, so the car pulls as it did when it was new, with the EGR fault gone. It is not a performance remap and we do not sell it as one.
