Which engine is in your Amarok

Two generations, three engine families, and from 2023 a Ford engine under a VW badge. Which one you have decides whether the weak point is a bolt-on module or a cooler buried under the intake.

| Engine | Amarok | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | 2.0 TDI and 2.0 BiTDI, EA189 four-cylinder | 2H | 2010 to 2016 | Combined valve, cooler and bypass-flap module; flap failure and cooler cracking | | 3.0 V6 TDI, EA897 | 2H facelift | 2016 to 2022 | Cooler failure with coolant loss; valve and throttle fouling | | 2.0 EcoBlue, single and bi-turbo | Mk2 | 2023 onward | High-pressure and low-pressure EGR; valve and cooler fouling | | 3.0 V6 TDI, Ford-built | Mk2 | 2023 onward | Newer, thin record |

2.0 TDI and BiTDI EA189

The launch engines, shared with the Transporter T5.1 and the Crafter of the same years. The EGR is a single module combining valve, cooler and bypass flap, so a stuck flap or a cracked cooler means the whole unit at replacement time.

3.0 V6 TDI EA897

The same V6 as the Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne, and it fails the same way: cooler first, with coolant going missing and no puddle, and the cooler sits in the valley of the engine under the intake.

Mk2 2.0 EcoBlue and 3.0 V6

The 2023 Amarok is built alongside the Ford Ranger and carries Ford's engines. The EcoBlue runs twin EGR circuits and its valve and cooler faults are reported at lower mileage than older units. The V6 is newer with a thin record.

How the delete is done on the Amarok

You call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and the engine.

We confirm the ECU type before we set off.

We come to the truck, at your home, yard, farm or site, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.

Before anything is written we read every stored code and note the live EGR readings, so we know what we are dealing with.

We read the ECU file at the OBD port, write the EGR delete into it and load it back.

The engine is restarted and the live data checked: no EGR command, no flow check, no fault flagged.

Codes cleared, done.

Typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the Amarok does not leave where it is parked.

Delete versus replacement on the Amarok

An EGR clean on an Amarok is £80 to £200 and buys a few months if the fault is a fouled valve. On the EA189 the valve does not come alone: the combined module with the cooler and bypass flap is one part, so the parts figure is higher than a plain valve and the labour follows it, at £60 to £100 an hour independent or £100 to £140 at a dealer. On the V6 the cooler is under the intake, so the hours to reach it are the bill, and a dealer cooler job on the EA897 runs into four figures. Then the new part goes back into the same towing and short-run use that fouled the old one.

The software delete is £220, once. If the DPF is blocking as well, the DPF and EGR delete in the same visit is £445; the DPF and EGR delete page explains what that covers.

Off-road and track use

The delete is for off-road and track use only. An Amarok with the EGR removed from its software does not meet the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and the owner is responsible for how the vehicle is used after the work. A fair share of Amaroks in the North West spend their week on farms, shooting estates, quarries and construction sites, and that is the use this service is sold for.

Amarok engine questions

Which engine is in my Amarok, and how do I check?
Three ways. The engine code field on the V5C, the badge on the engine cover, or the year: a 2010 to 2016 truck is the 2.0 TDI or BiTDI, a 2016 to 2022 truck is the V6, and a 2023 onward truck carries Ford's EcoBlue or V6. Easiest of all, send us the reg and we will tell you.
Does the delete cover both the high-pressure and low-pressure EGR on the newer Amarok engines?
The later V6 and the Mk2's EcoBlue run a low-pressure loop alongside the high-pressure valve. How the delete handles the low-pressure circuit on your truck is something we confirm from the ECU file rather than assume.
Is the Amarok done through the OBD port, or does the ECU have to come out?
Through the OBD port in most cases. The Bosch ECUs across both generations can be read and written in place, so there is no strip-down and nothing leaves the truck. We confirm the ECU type from your reg before we set off, so if yours is an exception you will know before we arrive, not on the day.
Does the delete change the power or fuelling on the Amarok?
No. The delete targets the EGR maps only. Fuelling, boost and torque limits are left exactly as VW set them, so the truck tows as it did when it was new, with the EGR fault gone. It is not a performance remap and we do not sell it as one.

Book your Amarok EGR delete: call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will confirm the engine and a time.

It is £220, we come to you, and the job takes 60 to 90 minutes on site with nothing removed from the truck. See VW EGR delete for the rest of the range.
