The replacement bill on a Crafter
What replacement costs on a Crafter depends on which of its three engines you have. On the Mk1's 2.5 TDI five-cylinder the valve is a bolt-on part, so a fouled valve is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent, and a cooler fault on an older van adds gaskets, a coolant refill and the hours to reach it. On the 2.0 TDI EA189 from 2011 the valve does not come alone: valve, cooler and bypass flap are one module, so a seized flap or a cracked cooler means the whole unit, and the parts figure sits well above a plain valve. On the Mk2's EA288 there are two circuits, so two valves and two coolers to foul, and a dealer will price each on its own. Labour is £60 to £100 an hour at an independent, £100 to £140 at a VW Van Centre, plus the day the van is not earning.
Then the new module goes back into the same multi-drop round that fouled the first one. Carbon does not care that the part is new, and the second failure is on the owner's money, at the same rates, with the same day off the road.
Clean, replace or delete
| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted; module and cooler jobs above that | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |
The honest reading: a Crafter used on the road should be cleaned, not deleted. Cleaning is legal, it is the cheapest line on the table, and on a valve that is fouled rather than failed it works. Replacement is the right call when a module has physically failed on a road van. The delete is for the off-road or site Crafter whose operator is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.
Crafter engines covered
Crafter Mk1 2.5 TDI five-cylinder, 2006 to 2011
The launch engine, shared with the Transporter T5 2.5 of the same years. Cheaper valve, and it is the valve that fails repeatedly on a short-run van; cooler faults come with age and mileage. The Mk1 shares its body with the Mercedes Sprinter of the period, not its engines.
Crafter Mk1 2.0 TDI and BiTDI EA189, 2011 to 2016
The four-cylinder that replaced the 2.5, shared with the Transporter T5.1 and the Amarok. The combined valve, cooler and bypass-flap module is the expensive part: one failure, one whole unit.
Crafter Mk2 2.0 TDI EA288, 2017 onward
Euro 6 with high-pressure and low-pressure EGR, in 102 to 177 PS outputs and 2WD and 4Motion forms. Two circuits to foul, low-pressure cooler first. The same van as the MAN TGE, which fouls the same way.
Every engine above is £220. For the rest of the range see VW EGR delete, or call 0161 694 7331 to confirm a Crafter not listed.
What happens on the day
We come to the Crafter: the yard, the depot, the site, the road outside your house. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and the van does not go anywhere. We confirm the ECU type from the reg before we set off. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.
