The replacement bill on a Boxer

On the 2006 to 2016 Boxer 2.2 HDi, the part that fails is usually the cooler, not the valve. The engine is Ford-derived, the same 2.2 family as the Transit of those years, and its cooler cracks internally so coolant disappears into the intake with no leak to find. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent. The cooler sits behind the intake pipework and takes longer to get at, so parts, gaskets, coolant and the labour hours together push the bill higher than the valve figure. Book it through a dealer at £100 to £140 an hour rather than an independent at £60 to £100 and the same job costs more again. A clean is £80 to £200 and buys a few months on a van that does short runs.

Then the new part goes back into the same work: multi-drop, tail-lift idling, engine off at every address. It fouls the same way, on the same timescale, and the second bill is yours.

Clean, replace or delete

| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |

The honest reading: a Boxer that works on the road should be cleaned, not deleted. Cleaning is legal, it is the cheapest line on the table, and on a valve that is fouled rather than failed it works. Replacement is the right call when a valve or cooler has physically failed on a road van. The delete is for the off-road Boxer, on site or in a compound, whose owner is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.

Boxer engines covered

Boxer 2.2 HDi, 2006 to 2016

The Ford-derived 2.2, in outputs from 100 to 150 PS across the years. This is the engine with the expensive cooler. Valve sticking is the cheaper, more frequent fault on the same unit.

Boxer 3.0 HDi, 2006 to 2016

The Iveco F1C, shared with the Ducato 3.0 and the Daily. Cooler and valve faults, with a bigger engine bay and a bigger bill when the cooler is involved.

Boxer 2.0 BlueHDi, 2016 to 2019

The PSA DW10, with a low-pressure EGR loop alongside the high-pressure one. Two valves and two coolers to foul, so two ways to run up a replacement bill.

Boxer 2.2 BlueHDi, 2019 onward

A new Stellantis 2.2, not the old Ford-derived unit. Newer, a shorter record, and the same £220 remap.

The Boxer is the same van as the Citroën Relay and the Fiat Ducato. See Peugeot EGR delete for the rest of the range, or call 0161 694 7331 for a variant not listed.

What happens on the day

We come to the van: your yard, a site, a depot, your home. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and the van does not leave the yard. Nothing comes off the engine and nothing needs replacing. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Cost questions on the Boxer

Why is £220 cheaper than a new EGR valve on a Boxer?
Because nothing is bought and nothing comes off. No valve, no cooler, no gaskets, no coolant, no labour hours reaching the cooler behind the intake, and no garage overhead built into the price. The delete is a software change, written through the OBD port with the van parked where it is.
Should I try an EGR clean on my Boxer first?
Yes, if the van is used on the road. Cleaning is road-legal and the right first step, and on a Boxer with a fouled rather than failed valve it can hold the fault off for months. It does nothing for a cracked cooler. The delete is for off-road and track vehicles only, where the owner has decided the EGR bills stop here.
Is it worth deleting the EGR on a high-mileage Boxer?
On an off-road van, yes, and the mileage is the reason. A 180,000-mile Boxer has a valve and cooler that have spent years in soot, a replacement would go the same way in the same work, and £220 once takes the fault out of the software for good. We read the codes first and say if the van needs something else.
Is the price the same for every Boxer engine?
Yes. £220 whichever engine: 2.2 HDi, 3.0 HDi, 2.0 BlueHDi or 2.2 BlueHDi, panel van, Luton, tipper or chassis cab. No surcharge for the newer ECUs, and no call-out charge for coming to you anywhere within our 40-mile radius of Eccles.
