Peugeot Expert EGR delete

Engine management light on the way to the second job, a flat spot pulling away, then limp mode at 40 on the dual carriageway. On the Expert that is the EGR valve. Mobile software delete at your location, £220.

How the EGR fails on an Expert

On the 1.6 HDi, the valve sticks. The DV6 in the 2007 to 2016 Expert, and the 1.6 BlueHDi that carried on to 2019, has the most-replaced EGR valve in the PSA range. Town work never gets the intake hot enough to burn soot off, so carbon builds on the valve seat until it stops closing. The first sign is a hesitation pulling away and a rougher idle. Then the engine management light, with P0401 or P0404 stored, and then limp mode with age and mileage, usually on a cold morning after a week of short runs. A new valve goes the same way in the same work.

On the 2.0 HDi and BlueHDi, it is the valve and then the cooler. The DW10's valve sticks like the 1.6's, and on later units the cooler bypass flap jams as well, so the ECU sees flow it cannot reconcile and logs P0400 or P0402. The BlueHDi adds a low-pressure EGR loop with its own valve and cooler, so there are two circuits to foul. Where a DW10 cooler fails, the sign is coolant dropping with no leak underneath and white smoke on start-up.

Expert Mk2 1.6 HDi and 2.0 HDi, 2007 to 2016

The DV6 1.6 and the DW10 2.0. The 1.6's valve is the repeat offender; the 2.0 adds the cooler bypass fault on later engines.

Expert Mk3 1.6 BlueHDi, 2.0 BlueHDi and 1.5 BlueHDi, 2016 onward

The DV6 1.6 BlueHDi ran to 2019, the DW10 2.0 BlueHDi throughout, and the DV5 1.5 BlueHDi from 2019. The BlueHDi engines run high-pressure and low-pressure EGR, so two valves and two coolers. The 1.5 is newer with a thin record and the same remap.

The Mk3 is the same van as the Citroën Dispatch and the Toyota Proace. See Peugeot EGR delete for the rest of the range, or call 0161 694 7331 for a variant not listed.

What the delete does to that fault

The delete answers the valve fault directly. The ECU stops commanding the EGR valve, so a valve stuck with carbon can no longer produce the flow error that puts the Expert into limp mode, and there is nothing left to log a P0400-series code against. The EGR circuit is closed in software, so exhaust gas stops passing through the cooler; a DW10 bypass flap that has jammed no longer matters, and a cooler that has started weeping coolant into the intake stops being fed. On the BlueHDi both loops are handled the same way. Valve, cooler and pipework stay on the van and stop being used. Codes cleared, and the remap is permanent.

Is it definitely the EGR?

Three things help us confirm it on the phone. The exact codes from a code reader. Whether the coolant is dropping without a visible leak. The smoke: colour, and whether it is only on a cold start. If coolant has been entering the engine for months, the delete stops further ingress but does not undo damage already done, and we will say so on the day rather than remap a van that needs something else first. If a DPF light is on as well, both are handled in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Questions Expert owners ask

Is it definitely the EGR, or could it be something else on an Expert?
A P0400-series code on an Expert can also come from a split vacuum pipe, a fouled intake throttle or a boost leak rather than the valve, and a flat spot pulling away can be a turbo actuator. We read the codes and the live EGR data before we write anything. If it is not the EGR, we tell you.
My Expert has been losing coolant. Will the delete stop it?
If the loss is through the EGR cooler, yes: with the circuit closed in software, exhaust gas no longer passes through the cooler and the route into the intake is shut. It does not repair damage already done by coolant that has been burning in the cylinders for months. We check before we remap and tell you what we find.
Does the delete cover the EGR cooler on the Expert as well as the valve?
Yes. With the EGR circuit disabled, the cooler no longer carries exhaust gas, so a cracked cooler stops mattering and a sound one stops being worked. On a BlueHDi that goes for both coolers. Everything stays in place with the valve and pipework; nothing comes off the van and nothing needs replacing.
Will the fault codes come back on the Expert after the delete?
No. The EGR codes are cleared on the day, and the ECU is no longer monitoring a system it has stopped commanding, so there is nothing to log. Codes from unrelated systems are untouched. Anything that reappears would be a different fault, and we would say so.
