Which engine is in your Ducato
The Ducato has carried five diesel engines since 2006, from three different sources. Which one you have decides which part fails first.
| Engine | Ducato generation | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | 2.2 Multijet, Ford-derived four-cylinder | X250 | 2006 to 2011 | Cooler cracking with coolant loss; valve sticking | | 2.3 Multijet and Multijet II, Iveco F1A | X250 and X290 | 2006 onward | Valve sticking with P0400-series codes; cooler faults on Multijet II | | 3.0 Multijet, Iveco F1C | X250 and X290 | 2006 to 2020 | Cooler and valve faults | | 2.0 Multijet, Fiat four-cylinder | X250 and X290 | 2011 to 2016 | Valve sticking | | 2.2 Multijet 3, Stellantis four-cylinder | X290 | 2021 onward | Newer; record thin |
2.2 Multijet, 2006 to 2011
Ford-derived, the same family as the Transit's 2.2 TDCi. The cooler cracks and lets coolant into the intake; the valve sticks with carbon.
2.3 Multijet and Multijet II, 2006 onward
The Iveco F1A, shared with the Iveco Daily, and the engine in most Ducatos we see. Valve sticking first; cooler faults on the Multijet II.
3.0 Multijet, 2006 to 2020
The Iveco F1C, also in the Daily and the 3.0 HDi Boxer and Relay. Cooler and valve faults on a van that is usually carrying a heavy body.
2.0 Multijet, 2011 to 2016
Fiat's own four-cylinder in the lighter vans. Valve sticking.
2.2 Multijet 3, 2021 onward
A new Stellantis engine, not the old Ford-derived 2.2. Newer, thin record, same remap.
The Ducato is the same van as the Citroën Relay and the Peugeot Boxer. The rest of the range is on Fiat EGR delete.
How the delete is done on the Ducato
You call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and the engine.
We confirm the ECU type before we set off, so the right file is ready.
We arrive at your location
yard, depot, site, farm or home, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.
Pre-remap read of every stored fault code, EGR and otherwise, so we know what the van is reporting before anything changes.
ECU file read at the OBD port and the EGR delete written into it.
The valve and cooler stay on the engine and stop being commanded.
Engine restarted and live data checked
EGR position, air mass, coolant temperature, boost.
Codes cleared, done.
Typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the Ducato does not leave the yard.
Delete versus replacement on the Ducato
A valve on a 2.3 Multijet is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent, and on a van it is often the cooler as well, which adds parts, coolant and the hours to reach it at £60 to £100 an hour, or £100 to £140 at a dealer. The 3.0's cooler is a bigger job again. A clean is £80 to £200 and buys a few months on a multi-drop van. Every one of those is a repeat bill, because the new part goes straight back into the same short-run work.
The software delete is £220, once, whichever engine. DPF and EGR delete in the same visit, £445: see DPF and EGR delete.
Off-road and track use
The Ducato EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. A van with the EGR removed from its software no longer meets the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and it is the operator's responsibility to keep it to the use it is sold for. Plenty of Ducatos spend their week on housing sites, compounds and farm tracks, and that is the use this service exists for.
