Which engine is in your GLE
Two generations of GLE, four diesel engines and two EGR layouts, with the ML behind them on the same units. Which one is in yours decides what fails and when.
| Engine | GLE | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | 2.1 OM651 four-cylinder | GLE 250d W166 | 2015 to 2018 | Cooler cracks internally, coolant loss with no leak; valve sticks with carbon | | 3.0 OM642 V6 | GLE 350d W166 | 2015 to 2018 | Cooler and oil-cooler leaks in the valley of the engine; valve faults | | 2.0 OM654 four-cylinder | GLE 300d V167 | 2019 onward | High-pressure and low-pressure circuits; fouling on both | | 2.9 OM656 six-cylinder | GLE 350d and 400d V167 | 2019 onward | Twin-circuit layout; record thin | | OM642 V6 and OM651 (ML 250 CDI) | ML W164 and W166 | 2005 to 2015 | As the W166 GLE above |
The W166 engines are the ones we see most. The 250d's OM651 is the engine in the C-Class, the GLC and the Sprinter, and it goes the same way in all of them: the cooler cracks, the coolant level drops with no leak to find, then white smoke on a cold start and a P0400-series code. The 350d's OM642 is shared with the GLS and the Sprinter 319 CDI; its coolers sit under the intake and leak with age.
The V167's OM654 and OM656 are a different design. The low-pressure loop takes exhaust gas from after the particulate filter and feeds it back in ahead of the turbo, so there are two valves and two coolers to foul instead of one. Both are newer engines with shorter records. All of them are covered by the same remap, and the rest of the range is on the Mercedes EGR delete hub.
How the delete is done on the GLE
You call with the reg and the engine.
We confirm the ECU type before we set off.
We come to the car
home, office car park or wherever it is parked within 40 miles of Eccles.
Pre-remap read of every stored code.
ECU file read through the OBD port, the EGR delete written into it and the file flashed back.
Engine restarted, live data checked to confirm the ECU is no longer commanding the EGR valve, or on the V167, either of them.
Codes cleared, done.
Typically 60 to 90 minutes.
Nothing is removed; the valve and cooler stay on the engine and stop being used.
Delete versus replacement on the GLE
A single EGR valve is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent garage. On the OM651 the cooler is the usual failure and it sits behind the engine, so the hours go up; on the OM642 the coolers are in the valley under the intake alongside the oil cooler, and lifting that off at £60 to £100 an hour independent or £100 to £140 at a dealer puts a V6 cooler job into four figures. The V167 engines have two valves and two coolers. An EGR clean is £80 to £200 and lasts until the same use fouls it again.
The software delete is £220, once, whichever engine. If the DPF is blocked as well, the DPF and EGR delete are done in the same visit for £445.
Off-road and track use
The GLE EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. A vehicle with the EGR removed from its software does not meet the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and the owner is responsible for how the vehicle is used after the remap. Estate and equestrian-yard GLEs on private land are the population this service is sold for.
