Mercedes E-Class EGR delete
£220 once. Or an OM651 cooler every few years at dealer rates, and a V6 cooler buried under the intake if you have the 350.

The replacement bill on an E-Class
On the E-Class the part that fails is usually the cooler, and which cooler decides the bill. On the OM651 four-cylinder in the W212 and the 220 CDI badges, the EGR cooler cracks internally with age and mileage, and replacing it means cooler, gaskets, coolant and the hours to reach it behind the engine. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent garage; the cooler job sits above that. On the OM642 V6 in the E320 and E350 CDI, the coolers sit in the valley under the intake, so the labour is most of the invoice: several hours at £60 to £100 an hour independent or £100 to £140 at a dealer, and a bill into four figures. The W213's OM654 has two circuits and two coolers to reach.
Then the new cooler goes back into the same duty cycle that cracked the first one: an airport rank, a retired couple's short trips. The second failure is on your money.
Clean, replace or delete
| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted; more for a cooler, four figures on a V6 | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |
The honest reading: if the E-Class is used on the road, cleaning is the right first step and the right call while the valve is merely coated. Replacement is the right call when a cooler has cracked or a valve has physically failed on a road car. The delete is for the off-road or track E-Class whose owner is on a second or third EGR bill and does not want a fourth.
E-Class engines covered
E200, E220 and E270 CDI W211: OM646 and OM647, 2002 to 2009
The four-cylinder OM646 and the 2.7 five-cylinder OM647. A valve that sticks with carbon and comes back after every clean.
E280 and E320 CDI W211: OM642 V6, later W211 cars
The first E-Class V6 with the buried cooler. Cooler and oil-cooler leaks together, and the labour to match.
E200, E220 and E250 CDI W212: OM651, 2009 to 2016
The engine that generates most E-Class EGR calls. Cooler cracking with coolant loss: level dropping, no leak, white smoke on a cold start. Shared with the C-Class and the Sprinter.
E300 and E350 CDI W212: OM642, 2009 to 2016
The V6 again, later badged 350 BlueTEC. The expensive cooler.
E200d, E220d and E300d W213: OM654, 2016 to 2023
The 2.0 OM654, Euro 6 with high-pressure and low-pressure EGR. Two valves, two coolers, a shorter record so far.
E350d and E400d W213: OM642 to 2018, then OM656
The V6 carried on to 2018, then the OM656 straight six took over as the 400d. Thin record.

What happens on the day
We come to the car within a 40-mile radius of Eccles: home, office car park, wherever it lives. We connect at the OBD port under the dash, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked to confirm the ECU is no longer commanding the valve, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and nothing is unbolted. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.
