Mercedes Sprinter EGR delete

If there is one engine that defines EGR failure in the van world, it is the Mercedes OM651. The 2.1 CDI unit fitted to the current-generation Sprinter, covering the 313, 314 and 316 CDI four-cylinder variants, has a well-documented EGR cooler problem. The 319 CDI uses a different engine, the OM642 3.0 V6, which carries the same EGR weakness in a larger unit. Coolant leaks into the intake. White smoke appears from the exhaust. The engine management light comes on. And if it is ignored long enough, the engine ends up damaged.

The OM651 and OM642 EGR cooler problem

The EGR cooler on both engines is cast and positioned in a way that makes it particularly vulnerable to thermal stress. Repeated heat cycles cause small cracks to develop in the cooler matrix. Coolant then leaks through those cracks and into the intake side of the engine. The OM642 V6 in the 319 CDI is a different casting to the OM651 four-cylinder, but the failure mode is the same.

The symptoms are consistent across variants:

  • White or grey smoke from the exhaust on startup or under load
  • Coolant level dropping with no visible external leak
  • Coolant smell from the engine bay or exhaust
  • Engine management light and EGR-related fault codes

Left untreated, coolant in the combustion chamber causes hydrolock or liner damage. The repair bills that follow are substantial.

What the ECU delete does

The remap instructs the engine management system to stop operating the EGR entirely. The valve and cooler remain in the vehicle but are taken out of active use. The ECU no longer commands EGR flow, no longer monitors EGR position, and no longer stores EGR fault codes.

The result is a permanent fix rather than a temporary repair. A new EGR cooler on either engine is not a cheap job, and there is no guarantee the replacement will not develop the same fault in another 60,000 miles.

Frequently asked questions

Is EGR delete road-legal?
No. EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. It is not road-legal and is not appropriate for vehicles used on public roads.
My Sprinter is still driveable but has white smoke on startup. Is the remap enough?
In many cases, yes. If the coolant loss is minor and the engine is otherwise healthy, the remap stops further coolant ingress by deactivating the EGR cooler. We will assess on the day and advise if we think there is a deeper issue.
Do I need to flush the intake after the delete?
Not as part of this service. The remap stops the problem at source. If there is already significant coolant residue in the intake, you may want to have it cleaned separately, we can advise.
Can you remap a Sprinter with a high-roof body?
Yes. The remap is carried out through the OBD port and is not affected by body type or load configuration.
What if the van is mid-job and I need it back quickly?
The remap takes around 45 minutes. If the van is driveable, we can work around your schedule to minimise downtime.
