Mercedes S-Class EGR delete
£220 once. Or an EGR valve and cooler every few years at dealer labour rates, on a car where the cooler is not a quick part to reach.

The replacement bill on an S-Class
An EGR valve on its own is the cheap end of the bill. On the S320 CDI, S350 CDI and S350 BlueTEC the engine is the OM642 V6, and the part that lets go is more often the cooler than the valve, with the oil cooler in the V of the engine a frequent second leak on the same car. The cooler takes hours to reach in an S-Class engine bay, and the job comes with new gaskets, a coolant refill and, at a dealer, a diagnostic charge before anyone picks up a spanner. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent garage. The V6 cooler costs more than that in parts and labour together, and dealer rates of £100 to £140 an hour push it further. On the S300 BlueTEC Hybrid, the OM651 four-cylinder's cooler cracks internally and brings the same coolant-loss bill.
Then the new part goes back into the same use that fouled the first one: airport runs, hotel ranks, idling in traffic. The second failure is on your money, at the same rate.
Clean, replace or delete
| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |
Read the table honestly. If the S-Class is used on the road, a clean is the right call, and a replacement is the right call once a valve has physically failed. Both keep the car within its emissions approval. The delete is for the off-road or track vehicle whose owner is looking at a second or third EGR bill. It is permanent, and it is not road-legal.
S-Class engines covered
S320 CDI and S350 CDI: OM642 3.0 V6, W221, 2005 to 2013
The expensive one. The cooler is the usual failure and it is buried, so labour dominates the bill. Coolant loss with nothing on the floor, white smoke on a cold start, then P0401 or P0402 and limp mode.
S350 BlueTEC: OM642, W222, 2013 to 2017
Same V6, same cooler, same labour hours. The AdBlue system is separate from the EGR and is not touched by the delete.
S300 BlueTEC Hybrid: OM651 2.1 four-cylinder, W222, 2013 to 2017
The cheaper valve, and the cooler that cracks with age and mileage, as it does on every OM651 from the C-Class to the Sprinter.
S350d and S400d: OM656 2.9 six-cylinder, W222 facelift and W223, 2017 onward
The newest engine, with a high-pressure and a low-pressure EGR circuit and a shorter fault record.

What happens on the day
We come to the car, at home, at the office or at the depot, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, write the EGR delete into the ECU file, then restart the engine and check the live data before clearing the codes. Roughly an hour, and nothing is removed from the car. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445; the DPF and EGR delete page explains the combined job.
