How the EGR fails on a GLC
The cooler cracks first. The 220d and 250d use the OM651 2.1-litre four-cylinder, and its EGR cooler is a water-cooled heat exchanger sitting in the exhaust gas path that cracks internally with age and mileage. Coolant seeps into the intake and burns off in the cylinders, so the first sign is not a warning light. It is the expansion tank, down a little every fortnight, with no puddle, no wet hose and nothing on the driveway. Then comes grey or white smoke on a cold start, then the engine management light with P0401 or P0402 stored, and on a car that has been left too long, limp mode on the motorway with the family in the back. It is the same failure the OM651 gives in the C-Class and the Sprinter.
The valve sticks second. School runs and supermarket trips never get the intake hot enough to burn deposits off, so the valve fouls with carbon, the ECU sees a flow figure it cannot reconcile and logs P0401, P0402 or P0404 with no coolant loss at all. On the later OM654 there are two circuits to foul, and the low-pressure one behind the particulate filter clogs first.

The 2019 facelift moved to the 2.0 OM654, Euro 6 with high-pressure and low-pressure EGR. Valve and cooler fouling on both loops rather than a cracked cooler. Shorter record so far.

What the delete does to that fault
It answers both failures. The EGR circuit is closed in software, so exhaust gas stops passing through the OM651 cooler, and a cooler that has been weeping coolant into the intake is no longer fed: the coolant-loss route shuts. The ECU stops commanding the valve, so a valve stuck with carbon can no longer produce the flow error that puts the GLC into limp mode, and there is nothing left to log a P0400-series code against. On the OM654 the second loop is handled the same way. Valve, cooler and pipework stay on the engine and stop being used. Codes cleared on the day, and the remap is permanent.
Is it definitely the EGR?
Three things help us confirm it on the phone. The exact codes from a code reader. Whether the coolant is dropping with no visible leak. The smoke: colour, and whether it is only on a cold start. If coolant has been entering the engine for months, the delete stops further ingress but does not undo damage already done, and we will say so on the day rather than remap a car that needs something else first.
