EGR cooler failure on Ford diesels

The EGR cooler is the most common failure point on Ford diesel engines, and it fails for a straightforward reason. The cooler recirculates hot exhaust gas back through a water-cooled heat exchanger before returning it to the intake. Over time, the cooler becomes clogged with carbon deposits, or the cooler itself develops a leak. When it fails, coolant can enter the intake, the EGR flow drops, and the engine management system registers a fault.

On the 2.2 TDCi, this typically happens between 80,000 and 120,000 miles. On the 2.0 EcoBlue, failures have been reported as early as 60,000 miles. Replacement coolers are not cheap, and there is no guarantee the replacement will last significantly longer than the original.

Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue

The current-generation Transit is powered by the 2.0 EcoBlue four-cylinder. EGR cooler failures are already well documented on this engine despite it being a relatively recent unit. Fault codes P0400 and P0401 are the most common presentations. The 2.0 EcoBlue ECU delete removes EGR function from the software permanently.

Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi

The 2.2 TDCi powered the Transit Custom and full-size Transit for years and has an extensive EGR failure record. EGR cooler failure in particular is widespread on this engine. We have carried out more EGR deletes on 2.2 TDCi Transits than any other single Ford variant.

Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi

The Ranger pickup sees heavy use in agricultural, construction and off-road environments. Both the 2.2 and 3.2 TDCi engines are prone to EGR issues, with the 3.2 five-cylinder particularly susceptible to EGR cooler failure. Rangers used on farms and building sites are exactly the kind of application this service is designed for.

Why the ECU remap works where parts replacement does not

Replacing the EGR valve or cooler fixes the hardware. It does not fix the conditions that caused the failure. The new part is subject to exactly the same operating environment as the one it replaced. In many cases, owners find themselves replacing EGR components for the second or third time before looking for a different solution.

The ECU remap removes EGR function from the software. The engine no longer cycles exhaust gas through the intake, so the cooler and valve are no longer in use. There is nothing left to fail.

My Transit has already had the EGR cooler replaced. Can you still do the delete?

Yes. The remap works independently of the hardware state. We rewrite the ECU software, so the physical condition of the cooler or valve does not affect what we can do.

Is the Ford Transit EGR delete suitable if I use the van on building sites?

Many Transit operators use their vehicles on construction sites and unmade ground. If the vehicle is genuinely used off-road, this is exactly the application the service is intended for. It is the customer's responsibility to confirm the vehicle's use complies with road traffic law.
