EGR delete in Bradford

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a controlled portion of exhaust gas back into the engine's intake manifold. Its function is to reduce combustion temperature and lower NOx emissions, a requirement built into the engine management systems of most diesel vehicles produced in the last twenty years. On a diesel doing regular motorway runs, the system can operate within tolerances. On a diesel doing urban deliveries, short runs between Bradford's city centre and surrounding industrial areas, and frequent stop-start work, the picture is different.

The carbon load in the recirculated exhaust gas accumulates in the valve and intake passages faster than normal operating heat can clear it. The EGR valve fouls. The ECU detects the circuit is not performing within its mapped parameters, logs a fault code, and reduces engine output to protect the drivetrain. That is limp mode, and on a working van, it means a job that cannot be completed.

A software EGR delete removes the EGR system from the ECU's operating map entirely. We connect via the OBD port and write a modified map that stops the engine management system from commanding the EGR valve. The valve stays physically in place, nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no corroded fixings are touched. The engine runs without the EGR cycle. Fault codes are cleared before we leave. The modification is permanent.
