Service explainer

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a controlled portion of exhaust gas back into the engine's intake manifold. Its function is to reduce combustion temperature and lower NOx emissions, a requirement built into the engine management systems of most diesel vehicles produced in the last twenty years. On a diesel doing regular motorway runs, the system can operate within tolerances. On a diesel doing urban deliveries, short runs between Bradford's city centre and surrounding industrial areas, and frequent stop-start work, the picture is different.

The carbon load in the recirculated exhaust gas accumulates in the valve and intake passages faster than normal operating heat can clear it. The EGR valve fouls. The ECU detects the circuit is not performing within its mapped parameters, logs a fault code, and reduces engine output to protect the drivetrain. That is limp mode, and on a working van, it means a job that cannot be completed.

A software EGR delete removes the EGR system from the ECU's operating map entirely. We connect via the OBD port and write a modified map that stops the engine management system from commanding the EGR valve. The valve stays physically in place, nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no corroded fixings are touched. The engine runs without the EGR cycle. Fault codes are cleared before we leave. The modification is permanent.

Vehicle types

We carry out EGR deletes on a wide range of diesel commercials and cars. Common vehicles we work on include the Ford Transit (2.0 TDCi and EcoBlue), Mercedes Sprinter (CDI), Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6 (TDI), Volkswagen Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, and Fiat Ducato. We also work on diesel cars across most mainstream manufacturers.

Bradford has a significant concentration of commercial vehicle users in construction, logistics, textiles, and trade operations, many of them running the Ford Transit and Sprinter variants that are particularly prone to EGR fouling on the urban and semi-urban routes typical of the area.

Compatibility depends on the availability of a tuning file for your specific make, model, engine variant, and year. Call us before booking with your make, model, engine size, and registration year and we will confirm. Do not assume, a two-minute check avoids a wasted trip.

Mobile process

We arrive at your location in Bradford, home, workplace, yard, car park, or site.

Pre-remap diagnostic

all current fault codes are read and logged before any map is written.

ECU remap written via OBD port

the EGR cycle is disabled in software.

Verification

the modified map is confirmed correctly written, the engine is restarted and checked.

Fault codes cleared

all stored EGR codes are removed.

Done, typically 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to departure.

No recovery required. No garage. No overnight. You do not need to pre-strip any components. We need space to park alongside the vehicle and access to the OBD port inside the cab.

Cost comparison

The EGR delete is £220. That covers the visit, the remap, and the verification, no call-out charge on top, no diagnostic fee, no hourly rate. If you need the DPF removed in the same visit, the combined DPF and EGR delete is £445 total.

For comparison: a physical EGR valve replacement typically costs £300 to £700 fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether corroded fixings or surrounding components add time and parts. For vans that have already been through one or two replacements, the pattern is established. The software delete at £220 is a single permanent visit. There are no follow-up cleaning cycles and no repeat replacements. The maths is simple.

FAQs

What if the fault is a hardware failure rather than a software issue?
A mechanically seized, physically broken, or leaking EGR valve will still generate fault codes that the engine management system acts on. A software delete removes the ECU's commands to the valve and suppresses EGR-related fault codes, so even where there is an underlying hardware fault, the engine management system no longer triggers limp mode or fault warnings because of it. The valve stays in place but is no longer commanded. If you are unsure whether your fault is hardware or software, call us and we can advise based on your specific codes.
How is a software EGR delete different from fitting a blanking plate?
A blanking plate physically blocks the EGR valve's port to stop exhaust gas recirculation. The process involves dismantling components, removing the valve or associated pipework, and fitting a physical plate. Without a corresponding ECU remap, the engine management system continues to command the EGR valve, detects that it is not operating correctly, and logs a fault, which can itself trigger limp mode. A software delete removes the EGR cycle from the ECU map. No dismantling. No blanking plate. No conflict between hardware and software.
Can you remap a vehicle that has already had an EGR valve replaced?
Yes. Whether the valve is original or a replacement makes no difference to the software delete process. The remap works the same way regardless of the physical condition or provenance of the valve. The modification disables the EGR cycle in software, the valve's physical history is not relevant to that.
What happens if the ECU will not communicate?
If we cannot establish OBD communication on arrival, we will diagnose why before proceeding. Common causes include a faulty OBD port, a blown fuse, or an ECU that requires a specific communication protocol we need to confirm in advance. If the vehicle has an unusual or protected ECU that prevents the remap, we will let you know on the day, and there is no charge for an aborted visit.
