SERVICE EXPLAINER

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The stated purpose is to lower combustion temperature and reduce NOx output. On a petrol engine doing regular motorway mileage, the system functions tolerably. On a diesel doing urban work, site runs, and regular idling, the pattern that defines most commercial vehicle use in and around Halifax, the carbon load in the recirculated gas builds faster than normal engine heat can clear it.

The valve fouls. Deposits accumulate in the intake tract. The ECU detects that the EGR circuit is operating outside its calibrated parameters, logs a fault code, and reduces engine output to protect the drivetrain. That is limp mode: not a catastrophic failure, but a calculated restriction that makes the vehicle effectively unusable for work.

A software delete resolves this by removing the EGR system from the ECU's operating map entirely. The valve stays physically in place, nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no corroded fixings are disturbed. The ECU simply stops commanding the EGR system. Fault codes tied to EGR do not return.

VEHICLE TYPES

Most common vehicles presenting with EGR faults in the Halifax area are diesel vans and light commercials, though diesel cars are equally well covered.

Compatible vehicles include:

  • Ford Transit (TDCi, EcoBlue) and Transit Connect
  • Mercedes Sprinter (CDI, all generations)
  • Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro
  • Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6 (TDI), Crafter
  • Renault Trafic and Master
  • Fiat Ducato
  • Diesel cars across most common makes and engine families
Compatibility is subject to available tuning files. If your vehicle is not on this list, call 0161 694 7331 with your make, model, engine size, and year, we can confirm before you commit.

MOBILE PROCESS

The job is carried out at your location. No need to drive to a garage or arrange recovery.

We arrive at your chosen location, home, workplace, yard, or car park in Halifax or nearby.

Pre-remap diagnostic

all current fault codes are read and logged before any work begins.

ECU remap via OBD port

the modified map is written with the EGR system removed from the software.

Verification

the map is confirmed correctly written, the engine is restarted, and operation is checked.

Fault codes cleared

all stored EGR-related codes are cleared from the ECU.

Done. Typical job time is 60 to 90 minutes.

No dismantling, no engine bay access, no parts required.

COST COMPARISON

The EGR delete costs £220. That covers the visit, the remap, and the verification, no diagnostic fee on top, no call-out charge, no hidden extras.

Compare that against the alternatives. An EGR valve replacement is typically £300 to £700 fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether corroded fixings or surrounding components complicate the job. Cleaning is cheaper in the short term but requires repeat visits as the deposits return. Neither alternative changes the operating conditions that cause the fault in the first place.

If a DPF delete is also needed, both can be handled in the same visit. The combined EGR and DPF delete is £445.

FAQs

What if the fault is a hardware failure rather than a software issue?
If the EGR valve has physically seized or failed mechanically, the delete still resolves the fault from the ECU's perspective. The software map is rewritten to remove the EGR cycle, so the ECU stops monitoring and commanding the valve. Hardware faults in the EGR system are effectively made irrelevant by the remap. If there are additional faults unrelated to the EGR system, we will identify and advise on those during the pre-remap diagnostic.
How is a software EGR delete different from fitting a blanking plate?
A blanking plate physically blocks the EGR passage in the intake. This leaves the ECU still trying to command the EGR valve, resulting in fault codes and often limp mode, the problem is mechanically restricted but not resolved in the software. A software delete removes the EGR cycle from the ECU map. The ECU no longer commands the valve, no fault codes are generated, and the system behaves as though the EGR circuit does not exist.
Can you remap a vehicle that has already had an EGR valve replaced?
Yes. A replacement valve will eventually develop the same faults as the original, because the operating conditions that cause carbon build-up have not changed. The remap works regardless of whether the current valve is original or a replacement, it is a software operation, not dependent on the physical condition of the valve.
What happens if the ECU will not communicate?
Before any work is committed, we connect to the OBD port and confirm that the ECU is readable and the remap file is available. If communication cannot be established, due to a locked ECU, damaged port, or incompatible module, we will advise you before the job proceeds. No remap charge applies if we cannot complete the work.
