What the EGR system does and why it fails on diesels
The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a controlled portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. Its purpose is to reduce combustion temperature and lower NOx output. On a petrol engine doing varied mixed driving, the system can function tolerably. On a diesel used for trade runs across Sheffield, stops in Attercliffe, reversals at Meadowhall, short hauls up and down the Don Valley, the carbon load in the recirculated exhaust gas accumulates faster than the heat generated by that kind of driving can clear it.
The valve fouls. Intake passages develop deposits. The ECU detects that the EGR circuit is not operating within its expected parameters, logs a fault code, and dials back engine output to protect the drivetrain. The result is limp mode, reduced power, and, for a working van, lost time.
A software delete addresses this by removing the EGR system from the ECU's operating map entirely. The valve remains physically in place. Nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no surrounding components are disturbed. The engine runs without the EGR cycle, the fault code does not return, and the symptoms do not come back.
Vehicle coverage
We carry out EGR deletes across a wide range of diesel commercial vehicles and cars. Common vehicles covered include the Ford Transit (TDCi and EcoBlue), Mercedes Sprinter (CDI), Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6 (TDI), Volkswagen Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, and Fiat Ducato. Diesel cars are covered across a broad range of makes and models where a tuning file is available for the specific engine variant.
Compatibility is always subject to available tuning files. Before booking, call 0161 694 7331 with your make, model, engine, and year and we will confirm whether your vehicle is covered. Do not assume, some engine variants require confirmation.
What happens on the day
The process runs in a fixed sequence:
We arrive at your location in Sheffield, yard, car park, home, or commercial premises.
Pre-remap diagnostic
all stored fault codes are read and logged before any modification is made.
ECU remap written via OBD port
the modified map is flashed to the ECU with the EGR system removed from its operating parameters.
Verification
the engine is restarted and the map is confirmed as correctly written.
Fault codes cleared
all EGR-related codes are cleared before we leave.
Done. Total visit time is typically 60–90 minutes.
No engine bay access is required. The entire job is carried out through the OBD diagnostic port inside the cabin.
Cost
The EGR delete is £220. That price covers the visit, the remap, and the verification. There is no call-out charge, no diagnostic fee, and no per-hour rate on top. If the DPF also needs to be deleted in the same visit, the combined price is £445.
An EGR valve replacement is typically a £300–£600 job fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether corrosion around the fixings adds to the labour. For a van that has already had one replacement, the economics are straightforward: a software delete at £220 ends the cycle. There are no parts to order, no repeat appointments, and no second replacement to factor into the maintenance budget.
Legal notice
EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. A vehicle fitted with an EGR delete does not comply with current UK road emissions requirements and must not be used on public roads following this modification. This removes a component of the vehicle's original emissions control system from the engine management map. The owner is responsible for ensuring the vehicle is used only in contexts where this modification is legally permitted.
