The replacement bill on a Trafic
On a Trafic the valve is the usual failure, and on the Mk3's 1.6 dCi it fails early. The R9M sticks with carbon at mileages where other vans are still fine, worst on the twin-turbo 125 and 145 PS versions, and a new valve is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent depending on the engine and whether the cooler comes out with it. On the older 2.0 dCi M9R the valve is dearer to reach and the cooler can need doing at the same time. Book it through a dealer at £100 to £140 an hour rather than an independent at £60 to £100 and the same job costs more. A clean is £80 to £200 and buys a few months on a van that never gets a hot run.
Then the new valve goes back into the same work: eight drops before ten, engine off at every one, idling outside the wholesaler. It fouls the same way, on the same timescale, and the second bill is yours.

The honest reading: a Trafic that works on the road should be cleaned, not deleted. Cleaning is legal, it is the cheapest line on the table, and on a valve that is fouled rather than failed it works. Replacement is right when a valve has physically failed on a road van. The delete is for the off-road Trafic, on site or in a compound, whose owner is on the second or third valve and wants it to be the last.

Trafic Mk2 1.9 dCi, 2.0 dCi and 2.5 dCi, 2001 to 2014
The F9Q 1.9, the M9R 2.0 and the G9U 2.5. All three stick their valves with carbon; the 2.0 and 2.5 add cooler faults with age, and the cooler is the part that turns a valve bill into a bigger one. Shared with the Vauxhall Vivaro A and Nissan Primastar.
Trafic Mk3 1.6 dCi, 2014 to 2019
The R9M, in 95 and 120 PS single-turbo and 125 and 145 PS twin-turbo forms. The cheap valve that fails repeatedly and early. This is the engine most Trafics on the road carry.
Trafic Mk3 2.0 Blue dCi, 2019 onward
The 2.0 M9R that replaced the 1.6 at the 2019 facelift, 120 to 170 PS. Newer, a Euro 6d unit with a shorter record, and the same £220 remap.

What happens on the day
We come to the van: your yard, a site, a depot, your home. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and the van does not leave the yard. Nothing comes off the engine and nothing needs replacing.
