Vauxhall Vivaro EGR delete

The Vauxhall Vivaro B is developing a reputation for early EGR failures, particularly the 1.6 BiTurbo CDTi with the R9M engine. Owners are reporting EGR-related limp mode and fault codes from as low as 60,000 miles on this unit. For a workhorse van still in active trade use, that is far too early to be dealing with this kind of failure.

We carry out a full software-based EGR delete on the Vivaro via ECU remap. We come to your location. £220 flat.

EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. Not for use on public roads.

The R9M engine: why it fails early

The 1.6 CDTi R9M is a Renault-developed unit shared across the Vivaro B, Renault Trafic, and Nissan NV300. It is a capable engine but its EGR system has a documented vulnerability at the valve and the EGR cooler bypass circuit.

The R9M's EGR valve is known to stick at relatively low mileage compared to competitors. The most common trigger is short-cycle use: a van doing multiple short site visits per day never reaches a sustained operating temperature that would keep the EGR passages clear. Carbon accumulates. The valve sticks open, or sticks in a position the ECU cannot reconcile with its expected flow data.

The result is a P0403 or P0401 fault code appearing in the ECU log, usually accompanied by an amber engine management light and, in many cases, the van dropping into limp mode. At 60,000 to 80,000 miles on a working van, this is a problem owners cannot afford to leave unresolved.

The R9M EGR valve is not a cheap part, and fitting a replacement does not prevent recurrence on a van used in the same way. Software delete addresses the problem permanently.

Engine variants covered

1.6 CDTi BiTurbo, R9M engine This is the most commonly affected Vivaro B variant. The BiTurbo unit runs higher exhaust gas volumes through the EGR circuit than the single turbo, which accelerates valve wear. EGR faults on the R9M BiTurbo commonly appear between 60,000 and 90,000 miles.

2.0 CDTi, M9R engine The 2.0 CDTi on the Vivaro B uses the Renault-developed M9R, the same unit found in the Renault Trafic and Nissan NV300 from this generation. EGR failures on this engine follow a more typical pattern: usually from 90,000 miles upward, with valve sticking being the primary issue rather than cooler failure.

Movano is covered on the same basis. The Movano shares EGR architecture with the Vivaro on the relevant engine families and the delete process is identical. If you have a Movano with EGR faults, call us, it is treated as the same service.

The Renault Trafic with the R9M engine is also covered, since the platform is shared. Call with the registration to confirm.

What the delete involves

We attend your location and connect to the Vivaro's OBD port. We read the ECU file, apply the EGR delete map, and write it back. The EGR valve receives no command signal from the ECU and is no longer monitored. All stored EGR fault codes are cleared.

Nothing is physically removed. The valve and cooler assembly stay in place. There is no blanking plate, no pipework to cap, and no risk of air leaks from disturbed components. The ECU simply stops treating the EGR as an active system.

Typical session time on the Vivaro is 60 to 90 minutes. We run a post-remap check before leaving to confirm the delete is clean and the fault codes have not returned.

The site-work case for EGR delete

Many Vivaros doing genuine site work qualify for the off-road use category that EGR delete is designed for. If your van spends time on construction sites, agricultural land, industrial estates with unmade roads, or other off-road environments, EGR delete is an appropriate solution for that operational context.

We are straightforward about the legal position: this service is not for public road use. If your van's primary use is on public roads, this is not the right service. If it is used for genuine off-road or site applications, call us and we will discuss whether this is the right fit.

Frequently asked questions

My Vivaro goes into limp mode with P0403. Is that definitely the EGR?
P0403 is the EGR control circuit fault code. On the Vivaro B 1.6 CDTi it is almost always the EGR valve. It is worth having the fault code context read properly before booking, we can advise over the phone if you can give us the full fault code readout.
The R9M valve was replaced recently but the fault came back. Will the delete help?
Yes. Replacing the valve without an ECU delete only addresses the mechanical component. The underlying pattern of use that caused the original failure will cause the new valve to fail again. The ECU delete removes EGR operation entirely, so there is nothing left to fail.
Is the Vivaro B the same platform as the Renault Trafic?
Yes. The Vivaro B and Trafic III share the same platform and R9M engine. The ECU calibrations differ between manufacturers, but we work with both. Call with your registration for confirmation.
What about the Vivaro C?
The Vivaro C (2019-present) uses a different platform and engine range. Call us with the registration and we will check compatibility before booking.
Do you cover the Movano?
Yes. The Movano is covered at the same price and through the same process.
Can you come to a building site or depot?
Yes. We are fully mobile and come to wherever the vehicle is parked. Site visits are standard, just let us know when you book so we can plan the visit around site access.
