How the EGR fails on a Navara

The valve sticks first. Both Navara engines, the D40's 2.5 dCi YD25 and the NP300's 2.3 dCi M9T, put a lot of soot through the intake, and short runs with a load on never get it hot enough to burn off. The valve gums up, the ECU sees a flow figure it cannot match, and the truck loses power. Owners notice a flat spot pulling away with a trailer, then the engine management light, then limp mode. P0401, P0402 and P0404 are the codes we see most. It happens with age and mileage, and on the NP300 it is widely reported.

The cooler goes second. The M9T's cooler develops faults with age, and on the D40's 3.0 V6 dCi the cooler is the known weak point. Coolant drops with no puddle underneath, and there is white or grey smoke on a cold start.

The intake fills up. On a YD25 the carbon builds in the manifold as well as on the valve, so a cleaned valve goes back into a dirty intake and sticks again.

Navara D40 2.5 dCi: YD25, 2005 to 2015

Every four-cylinder D40, King Cab and Double Cab, and the same engine as the Pathfinder R51. Valve and cooler fouling with heavy intake carbon is the pattern.

Navara D40 3.0 V6 dCi: V9X, 2010 to 2014

The Renault-built V6 in the top D40 and the Pathfinder. Cooler faults rather than valve sticking.

Navara NP300 2.3 dCi: M9T single and twin turbo, 2016 to 2021

The D23 shares its M9T with the Renault Master, the Nissan NV400 and the Mercedes X-Class. Valve sticking and cooler faults, and the twin-turbo 190 PS version is no better protected than the single-turbo.

What the delete does to that fault

The delete closes the EGR circuit in software. The ECU stops commanding the valve, so a valve stuck in carbon can no longer trip the flow check and send the Navara into limp mode. No exhaust gas is routed back through the cooler, so a cracked core has no route to put coolant into the intake and the coolant-loss pattern stops. The intake stops receiving soot-laden gas, so the manifold does not keep filling. The valve, cooler and pipework stay in place; nothing is removed or blanked. Stored EGR codes are cleared and do not return, because the ECU is no longer looking for the readings that set them. Permanent, one visit.

Is it definitely the EGR?

Before we come out, three things help. The exact codes from a code reader, because P0401 to P0409 point at the EGR and other codes point elsewhere. Whether the coolant level is dropping with no visible leak. The colour of any smoke and when it appears. If coolant has been entering the engine for months, the delete stops further ingress but does not undo damage already done, and we will tell you that on the day rather than remap a truck that needs something else first. Questions Navara owners ask

Is it definitely the EGR, or could it be something else on a Navara?

Usually the codes settle it. P0400-series codes with a flat throttle response and limp mode point to the EGR. A boost leak, a blocked DPF or a failing injector can produce a similar loss of power with different codes. Read the codes before you call and we will say whether the delete is the right fix.

My Navara has been losing coolant. Will the delete stop it?

If the loss is through the EGR cooler, yes. Once the circuit is disabled no exhaust gas passes through the cooler, so coolant has no route into the intake. It does not repair damage already done by coolant that has reached the cylinders. We check for that before we remap.

Does the delete cover the EGR cooler on the Navara as well as the valve?

Yes. With the EGR circuit disabled in software the cooler no longer carries exhaust gas, so a cracked cooler stops mattering. It stays in place on the engine, connected as it was, and nothing is removed or blanked. On the NP300 and the V6 D40, where the cooler is the weak point, that is the part that counts.

Will the fault codes come back on the Navara after the delete?

No. The codes were set because the ECU commanded the valve and did not get the flow reading it expected. After the delete it does not command the valve or check for that reading, so P0401, P0402 and P0404 have nothing to trigger them. We clear the stored codes at the end of the visit.
