Land Rover Discovery EGR delete

Horsebox on the back, yard at the weekend, school run in between. The mix of towing and short trips that fouls a Discovery's EGR is the mix we come out to.

How the Discovery gets used

The Discovery is the North West's tow car. It pulls horseboxes to shows in Cheshire, caravans up the motorway and plant trailers between sites, and in between it does the jobs any family SUV does: the school gate, the supermarket, the station. Farms and rural estates run them alongside the Defender, on the yard, through the field gate and along the track before the road proper begins.

Both halves of that week are hard on the EGR, for opposite reasons. Short trips and idling never get the intake hot enough to burn deposits off the valve, so carbon builds and the valve sticks. Towing at full load pushes more exhaust gas through the cooler at higher temperature, and on the TDV6 and SDV6 that is what cracks it: coolant seeps into the intake, the expansion tank drops with no leak to find, white smoke appears on a cold start. Either way the engine management light comes on and the car drops into limp mode, usually on a hill with two tonnes behind it.

What changes after the delete

The ECU stops commanding the EGR valve, so a sticking valve can no longer put the Discovery into limp mode. Exhaust gas no longer passes through the cooler, so the coolant-loss route through a cracked V6 cooler closes. No EGR fault codes, no repeat valve bill, no second cooler at dealer rates. The valve and cooler stay in place; nothing is removed and nothing is ordered. The car stays where it is parked for the visit and is back in use the same hour. Fuelling, power and towing torque are left as Land Rover set them.

Discovery engines we cover

Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6, 2004 to 2009

The AJD-V6 shared with the Range Rover Sport L320. Cooler failure with coolant loss, valve faults alongside. The TDV6's crankshaft problem is a separate fault and the delete does nothing for it.

Discovery 4 2.7 TDV6, 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6, 2009 to 2016

Early Discovery 4s kept the 2.7; the 3.0 twin-turbo TDV6 and SDV6 followed. Same V6 family, same buried coolers, same coolant-loss route, shared with the Range Rover Sport of the same years.

Discovery 5 2.0 SD4, 3.0 TD6 and SD6, 2017 to 2020

The 2.0 SD4 is the Ingenium four-cylinder, Euro 6 with high-pressure and low-pressure EGR: two valves and two coolers to foul. The TD6 and SD6 are the last of the AJD-V6.

Discovery 5 3.0 D250 and D300, 2021 onward

The six-cylinder Ingenium mild hybrid. Newer, with a short record so far. We confirm coverage from the reg before we set off.

Anything not listed, call 0161 694 7331 and we will confirm. Every Land Rover we cover is on the Land Rover EGR delete page.

More than one Discovery

Plant hire firms, estates and equestrian yards often run two or three Discoverys alongside Defenders and pickups. We can work through them in one visit at your yard or depot and fit the appointments around shift patterns, so each vehicle is off the job for about an hour and no longer. It is £220 per vehicle. Send us the reg of each one before the visit and we will confirm the engine and ECU type in advance.

Questions from Discovery operators

Can you come to a site, depot or farm to do a Discovery?
Yes. We are mobile only and cover a 40-mile radius of Eccles, which takes in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside. We come to a home address, a plant compound, a livery yard or a farm. All we need is the vehicle, access to the OBD port under the dash and room to park alongside it for about an hour.
I run more than one Discovery. Can you do them in a single visit?
Yes. Give us the reg of each vehicle when you call and we will confirm the engine and ECU type before we set off, then work through them one after another at your premises. Each takes around an hour. The price is £220 per vehicle, whichever engine, with no call-out charge added for the extra vehicles.
How long is the Discovery off the road for?
About an hour, and it does not go anywhere. We connect at the OBD port, read the stored codes, write the delete, restart the engine and check the live data, then clear the codes. No strip-down, no parts to wait for and no trip to a workshop. If the trailer is hitched, it can stay hitched.
Can you do the DPF and the EGR on the Discovery in the same visit?
Yes. If the particulate filter is blocking as well as the EGR fouling, we handle both in the same visit for £445. The DPF and EGR delete page sets out what that covers. Tell us when you call so we allow the time.

Arrange a visit for your Discovery: call 0161 694 7331, tell us where the vehicle is and when it is off the job.

It is £220 per vehicle, we come to you anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles, and same-day and next-day slots are common. No call-out charge, no strip-down, nothing removed from the vehicle.
