Which engine is in your Superb

Three generations of Superb, four diesel engine families, and the year on the plate tells you most of what you need. Which one is in yours decides whether the weak point is a valve, a combined valve-and-cooler module, or two circuits.

| Engine | Superb | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | 1.9 and 2.0 TDI pump-düse | Mk1, early Mk2 | 2002 to about 2010 | Valve sticks with carbon | | 2.5 TDI V6 | Mk1 | 2002 to 2008 | Valve and cooler faults with age | | 1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA189 common rail | Mk2 | 2008 to 2015 | Combined valve, cooler and bypass-flap module; flap failure and cooler cracking | | 1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA288 | Mk3 | 2015 to 2023 | High-pressure valve sticking; low-pressure valve and cooler fouling |

1.9 and 2.0 TDI pump-düse

The engines in the Mk1 and the first Mk2s. The valve sticks with carbon on cars that do town work, the ECU logs P0401 or P0404, and the car drops into limp mode.

2.5 TDI V6

The Mk1's V6, shared with the Audi A4 and A6 of the period. Valve and cooler faults with age and mileage.

1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA189

The Mk2's engines from 2008, shared with the VW Passat B7. The EGR is a single module combining valve, cooler and bypass flap, so a stuck flap or a cracked cooler means the whole unit at replacement time.

1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA288

The Mk3's engines, shared with the VW Passat B8 and the Kodiaq. Two EGR circuits, and the low-pressure cooler is the part that fouls first.

How the delete is done on the Superb

You call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and the engine.

We confirm the ECU type before we set off.

We come to the car, at your home, workplace or yard, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.

Before anything is written we read every stored code and note the live EGR readings, so we know what we are dealing with.

We read the ECU file at the OBD port, write the EGR delete into it and load it back.

The engine is restarted and the live data checked: no EGR command, no flow check, no fault flagged.

Codes cleared, done.

Typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the car does not leave where it is parked.

Delete versus replacement on the Superb

An EGR clean on any Superb is £80 to £200 and buys a few months if the fault is a fouled valve. A new valve on a pump-düse or EA288 engine is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent. On the EA189 the valve does not come alone: the combined module with the cooler and bypass flap is one part, so the parts figure is higher and the labour follows it, at £60 to £100 an hour independent or £100 to £140 at a dealer. Then the new module goes back into the same commute that fouled the old one.

The software delete is £220, once. If the DPF is blocking as well, the DPF and EGR delete in the same visit is £445; the DPF and EGR delete page explains what that covers.

Off-road and track use

The delete is for off-road and track use only. A Superb with the EGR removed from its software does not meet the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and the owner is responsible for how the vehicle is used after the work.

Superb engine questions

Which engine is in my Superb, and how do I check?
Three ways. The engine code field on the V5C, the badge on the engine cover, or the year: a 2002 to 2008 car is pump-düse or the V6, a 2008 to 2015 car is almost always EA189, and a 2015 onward car is EA288. Easiest of all, send us the reg and we will tell you.
Does the delete cover both the high-pressure and low-pressure EGR on the newer Superb engines?
The Mk3's EA288 engines run a low-pressure loop alongside the high-pressure valve. How the delete handles the low-pressure circuit on your car is something we confirm from the ECU file rather than assume.
Is the Superb done through the OBD port, or does the ECU have to come out?
Through the OBD port in most cases. Bosch ECUs across all three generations can be read and written in place, so there is no strip-down and nothing leaves the car. We confirm the ECU type from your reg before we set off, so if yours is an exception you will know before we arrive, not on the day.
Does the delete change the power or fuelling on the Superb?
No. The delete targets the EGR maps only. Fuelling, boost and torque limits are left exactly as Skoda set them, so the car pulls as it did when it was new, with the EGR fault gone. It is not a performance remap and we do not sell it as one.
