What goes wrong on the 2.0 TDI Kodiaq

Every diesel Kodiaq carries the VW Group EA288 2.0 TDI, so the fault record belongs to the engine rather than the badge, and it is the same record as the Tiguan Allspace, the Superb and the Passat that share it. The EA288 runs two EGR circuits, and each fails in its own way.

The low-pressure loop fouls first. It takes exhaust gas from after the particulate filter and feeds it back in ahead of the turbo through its own valve and cooler. That cooler clogs with soot and moisture on a car that does short runs, and the valve fouls behind it. The owner sees a rough idle, a flat spot pulling away and then the engine management light with P0401 or P0404 stored. With age and mileage the low-pressure cooler can corrode and start weeping coolant, and the sign is a header tank going down with no leak underneath.

The high-pressure valve sticks. Carbon builds on the valve seat when the intake never gets properly hot, the ECU sees a flow figure it cannot reconcile, and the same codes appear with no coolant loss at all. Two circuits, one warning light, one fix.

Kodiaq Mk1 2.0 TDI, 2017 to 2024

The EA288 in 150 PS 2WD and 4x4 form, 190 PS 4x4, and the 200 PS unit fitted from the 2021 facelift. All run the twin-circuit EGR described above; the higher-output versions work the cooler harder and tend to foul the low-pressure loop sooner. The 4x4 versions are the ones that see farm tracks and towing fields.

Kodiaq Mk2 2.0 TDI, 2024 onward

The EA288 evo, in 150 and 193 PS forms. A newer engine with a shorter record and the same layout, covered by the same remap.

What the delete does to that fault

The delete answers both circuits at once. The ECU stops commanding either EGR valve, so a valve stuck with carbon can no longer produce the flow error that puts the Kodiaq into limp mode, and there is nothing left to log a P0400-series code against. Both loops are closed in software, so exhaust gas stops passing through either cooler; the low-pressure cooler stops clogging and one that has started weeping coolant into the intake stops being fed. Valves, coolers and pipework stay on the car and stop being used. Codes cleared, and the remap is permanent.

Is it definitely the EGR?

Three things help us confirm it on the phone. The exact codes from a code reader. Whether the coolant is dropping without a visible leak. The smoke: colour, and whether it is only on a cold start. If coolant has been entering the engine for months, the delete stops further ingress but does not undo damage already done, and we will say so on the day rather than remap a car that needs something else first. Questions Kodiaq owners ask

Is it definitely the EGR, or could it be something else on a Kodiaq?
A P0400-series code on an EA288 can also come from a split pipe on the low-pressure loop, a fouled intake throttle or a boost leak rather than the valve, and limp mode on its own can be the DPF. We read the codes and the live EGR data before we write anything. If it is not the EGR, we tell you.
My Kodiaq has been losing coolant. Will the delete stop it?
If the loss is through an EGR cooler, yes: with both circuits closed in software, exhaust gas no longer passes through either cooler and the route into the intake is shut. It does not repair damage already done by coolant that has been burning in the cylinders for months. We check before we remap and tell you what we find.
Does the delete cover the EGR cooler on the Kodiaq as well as the valve?
Yes, and on the EA288 that means both coolers. With the circuits disabled, neither cooler carries exhaust gas, so a clogged or cracked cooler stops mattering and a sound one stops being worked. Everything stays in place with the valves and pipework; nothing comes off the car and nothing needs replacing.
Will the fault codes come back on the Kodiaq after the delete?
No. The EGR codes are cleared on the day, and the ECU is no longer monitoring a system it has stopped commanding, so there is nothing to log. Codes from unrelated systems are untouched. Anything that reappears would be a different fault, and we would say so.
