The replacement bill on a Giulia
The Giulia's diesel is Alfa Romeo's own 2.2 JTDM, an all-aluminium four-cylinder that is a different engine from the Multijet units in the Giulietta and MiTo. That matters for the bill. It is a newer engine with a shorter parts history, most Giulias are still inside a main-dealer service pattern, and there is no cheap aftermarket valve on the shelf at every motor factor. A valve fitted at an independent garage on a modern diesel of this type runs £300 to £700. Book it through a dealer at £100 to £140 an hour rather than £60 to £100 at an independent and the total climbs. If the fault is in the cooler rather than the valve, add the gaskets, the coolant and the hours spent reaching it.
Then the new part goes back into the same duty cycle: the short runs, the town traffic, the cold starts that fouled the first one. The second failure is on your money, out of warranty, at the same rates.
Clean, replace or delete
| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |
Read the table straight. A Giulia used on the road should have its EGR cleaned: it is legal, it is the cheapest line, and on a car with a light carbon build-up it works. Replacement is the right call when the valve has physically failed on a road car. The delete is for the off-road or track Giulia whose owner is looking at a second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.
Giulia engines covered
Giulia 2.2 JTDM 150, 180 and 210 PS, 2016 onward
One diesel engine family across the whole Giulia range, in 150, 180 and 210 PS forms. The 2.2 JTDM's EGR record is thin compared with the older Fiat and Alfa diesels, and we do not borrow theirs to fill the gap. What we can say is how the system is built: a valve and a cooler in the exhaust gas path, both fouled by short, cool running. The cooler is the expensive part to reach. The valve is the part that fouls first. Both are covered by one remap.
The Stelvio carries the same engine in 180 and 210 PS forms and is done the same way. For the rest of the range, see Alfa Romeo EGR delete. If your Giulia's engine is not listed, call 0161 694 7331 and we will confirm.
What happens on the day
We come to the car, wherever it is parked: home, workplace, a unit, a car park. We connect at the OBD port under the dash, read every stored fault code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. The engine is restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and the car does not go anywhere. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.
