Alfa Romeo Stelvio EGR delete

School run, motorway commute, a caravan or a horsebox at the weekend, and a few that live on farm tracks. The use that fouls a Stelvio's EGR is the use we come out to. Mobile software delete, £220.

How the Stelvio gets used

Most Stelvio diesels in the North West are family cars first. A week is the school run, the supermarket, a commute into Manchester or Warrington with the last three miles in traffic, and the engine switched off before the intake has properly warmed through. Some are company cars doing long motorway days, which suits the engine, until the car gets home and spends the next fortnight on two-mile hops. Recirculated exhaust gas carries soot, and soot that never gets hot enough to burn off settles on the valve and in the cooler as a hard, tarry carbon.

A smaller group work harder. Stelvio Q4s tow, pull horseboxes across fields at weekend shows, and live on estates and farms where the way to the road is a track. Cold starts, low load and mud are the pattern, and the EGR fills up faster on it. That is the off-road use this service is sold for, and the only use it is sold for.

What changes after the delete

The ECU stops commanding the EGR valve, so a sticking valve can no longer put the Stelvio into limp mode or bring the engine management light on with a P0400-series code. The EGR circuit is closed in software, so exhaust gas stops passing through the cooler, and the route by which a cracked cooler lets coolant into the intake is shut. The valve and cooler stay in place and stop being used. No repeat valve bill. The car stays where it is parked and is back in use the same hour, with the codes cleared and the fix permanent.

Stelvio engines we cover

Stelvio 2.2 JTDM 180 and 210 PS, 2017 onward

One diesel engine across the Stelvio range: Alfa Romeo's own all-aluminium 2.2 JTDM, in 180 PS rear-wheel and Q4 forms and 210 PS Q4 form, from the car's 2017 launch. It is the same unit as the Giulia and is done the same way. The engine is new enough that its EGR record is thin, and we do not pad it out with the older Multijet history from the Giulietta and MiTo. The valve fouls first on short, cool running, and the cooler fails later with heat and age. Both are covered by the one remap, at the same price for either output.

For the rest of the range, see Alfa Romeo EGR delete. If your Stelvio is a version not listed here, call 0161 694 7331 and we will confirm before we set off.

More than one Stelvio

Less common than with a van, but it happens: a household with a Stelvio and a Giulia, a small business running two or three as company cars. We do several vehicles in one visit at a home, office or yard, and work around whoever needs their car first. £220 per vehicle. Send us the reg for each one beforehand and we confirm the engine and ECU type for every car before we set off.

Questions from Stelvio operators

Can you come to a site, depot or farm to do a Stelvio?
Yes. We are mobile only, and the Stelvio does not need a workshop: the job is done at the OBD port with the car parked where it is. A home address, an office car park, a farmyard, a compound or a livery yard are all normal for us, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.
I run more than one Stelvio. Can you do them in a single visit?
Yes. Two or more Stelvios, or a Stelvio and a Giulia, can be done back to back in one visit. Each car takes about an hour. Give us every reg in advance and we confirm each engine and ECU type beforehand. £220 per vehicle, no extra call-out charge for the second car.
How long is the Stelvio off the road for?
About an hour, and it does not go anywhere. We read the stored codes, read the ECU, write the delete, restart the engine, check the live data and clear the codes. There is no waiting for parts and no second appointment.
Can you do the DPF and the EGR on the Stelvio in the same visit?
Yes. If the Stelvio has a DPF fault as well as an EGR fault, both are handled in the same visit for £445. It is one appointment, one ECU read and write, and one set of codes cleared. Details are on the DPF and EGR delete page, or call and we will confirm the combination for your engine.
