The replacement bill on an Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo's diesels fall into two groups, and the bill depends on which one is in your car. The Giulia and Stelvio use Alfa's own 2.2 JTDM, an all-aluminium four-cylinder introduced in 2016. Most of these cars are still serviced through the dealer network, and that is where the cost sits: labour at £100 to £140 an hour against £60 to £100 at an independent. A valve is £300 to £700 fitted. The cooler, with gaskets, coolant and the hours needed to reach it, is above that.

The Giulietta and MiTo use the Fiat-derived 1.6 and 2.0 JTDM Multijet. They are older, easier to get at and better known in the trade. The valve is the usual failure, £300 to £700 fitted, and a clean at £80 to £200 often buys a year on a car that does longer runs.

Then the new part goes back into the same use: the school run, the commute through Salford, the same cold starts that fouled the first one. It fails the same way, and the second bill is on the owner's money.

Clean, replace or delete

| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted; cooler jobs above that | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |

Read the table honestly. An Alfa used on the road should be cleaned, because cleaning is legal and it works on a valve that is fouled rather than broken. Replacement is the right call when the valve has physically failed on a road car. The delete is for the track-day Giulia or the estate Stelvio whose owner is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.

Alfa Romeo models and engines

The 2.2 JTDM is Alfa's own engine and is not shared with the Fiat and Jeep Multijets, so its EGR record stands on its own and is still being built. The Multijet cars share their engines with Fiat, Jeep and Vauxhall, and their record is long.

Giulia (Type 952, 2016 onward), 2.2 JTDM 150 to 210 PS. The dealer-serviced one, with a cooler that takes labour hours to reach. Valve and cooler faults reported but the record is thin at model level. See Alfa Romeo Giulia EGR delete.

Stelvio (Type 949, 2017 onward), 2.2 JTDM 180 to 210 PS. The same engine as the Giulia in a heavier car that tows and does more loaded running. Same fault pattern, same bill. See Alfa Romeo Stelvio EGR delete.

Giulietta (Type 940, 2010 to 2020), 1.6 JTDM and 2.0 JTDM Multijet. The cheaper valve that fails repeatedly. Carbon sticks the valve, the engine management light comes on with a P0400-series code, then limp mode. No model page yet; we confirm from the reg.

MiTo (Type 955, 2008 to 2018), 1.3 JTDM and 1.6 JTDM Multijet, both offered from launch. A short-run city car, which is the duty cycle that fouls a valve fastest. Confirmed from the reg.

159, 147 and GT (to 2011), 1.9 JTDM Multijet. The old 1.9's valve failure is well documented across every badge that used it. Confirmed from the reg.

Every engine above is £220. If yours is not listed, call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will check it.

What happens on the day

We come to the car, at home, at work or at the track paddock. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and nothing comes off the engine. We confirm the ECU type from the reg before we set off, which matters on the 2.2 JTDM because the Giulia and Stelvio ECUs are newer than most we see. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Cost questions on the Alfa Romeo

Why is £220 cheaper than a new EGR valve on an Alfa Romeo?
Because nothing is bought and nothing is removed. No valve, no cooler, no gaskets, no coolant, no labour hours reaching the cooler on a 2.2 JTDM, and no dealer overhead built into the price. The delete is a software change written through the OBD port, with the car parked where you left it.
Should I try an EGR clean on my Alfa Romeo first?
Yes, if the car is used on the road. Cleaning is road-legal and the right first step. On a Giulietta or MiTo with a fouled Multijet valve it often holds the fault off for months. The delete is for off-road and track vehicles only, where the owner has decided the EGR bills end here.
Is it worth deleting the EGR on a high-mileage Alfa Romeo?
On an off-road or track car, yes, and the mileage is the argument. A Giulietta at 110,000 miles has a valve that has spent those miles in soot, and a replacement would go the same way in the same use. £220 once takes the fault out of the software. We read the codes first and tell you if the car needs something else.
Is the price the same for every Alfa Romeo engine?
Yes. £220 whichever engine: 2.2 JTDM, 2.0 or 1.6 JTDM Multijet, or the old 1.9. Giulia, Stelvio, Giulietta or MiTo. No surcharge for the newer ECUs on the Giulia and Stelvio, and no call-out charge for coming to you anywhere within our 40-mile radius of Eccles.
