The EGR warning tends not to announce itself cleanly. It starts with a rough idle, a hesitation when the engine's cold, a slight judder when you pull away from the lights on Lord Street or queue through the town centre. Then comes the loss of pull under load. Then, at some point on the way towards Formby or on the way out through Ainsdale, the engine management light solidifies and the vehicle drops into limp mode.

When limp mode activates, the ECU has decided the EGR fault is serious enough to restrict performance to protect the engine. RPM caps out early, acceleration flatlines, and a van that needed to be somewhere is now doing thirty on a sixty road.

What is happening inside is straightforward: the EGR valve routes exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature. Diesel engines doing short, stop-start runs, servicing streets in Birkdale, running circuits between Crossens and Churchtown, navigating the town centre one-ways, rarely reach the sustained temperature needed to burn off the carbon that builds up in the valve and surrounding passages. The valve fouls, sticks, or loses regulation. Cleaning removes deposits temporarily. Replacing the valve resets the clock. The driving conditions that caused the build-up do not change.
