Which engine is in your Q8

One body, two diesel engines, one EGR layout with two loops. The badge on the tailgate tells you which you have.

| Engine | Q8 generation | Years | EGR weak point | |---|---|---|---| | 3.0 V6 TDI EA897 evo, 45 TDI 231 PS and 50 TDI 286 PS | 4M8 | 2018 onward | Twin-circuit EGR; low-pressure valve and cooler fouling, high-pressure valve sticking, cooler coolant loss with age | | 4.0 V8 TDI, SQ8 435 PS | 4M8 | 2019 to 2020 | Same twin-circuit layout; EGR record thin at model level |

The V6 is the same EA897 evo fitted to the Q7 4M, the A6, A7 and A8, and the VW Touareg, and it fails the same way in all of them. The Euro 6 version takes exhaust gas from two places: a high-pressure loop straight off the exhaust side, and a low-pressure loop from after the particulate filter, fed back in ahead of the turbo. Two valves, two coolers, twice the surface for soot to settle on, and a water-cooled cooler that can crack with heat and age. The SQ8's V8 is rare enough that its record is short. Both are covered by the same remap.

How the delete is done on the Q8

You call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and the engine.

We confirm the ECU type before we set off, so the right file is ready.

We arrive at your location

home, workplace, yard or secure car park, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Eccles.

Pre-remap read of every stored fault code, EGR and otherwise, so we know what the car is reporting before anything changes.

ECU file read at the OBD port and the EGR delete written into it.

The valves and coolers stay on the engine and stop being commanded.

Engine restarted and live data checked

EGR position, air mass, coolant temperature, boost.

Codes cleared, done.

Typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the Q8 does not go anywhere.

Delete versus replacement on the Q8

Replacement on a Q8 is a labour job. A high-pressure valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent, and that is the cheap end. The V6 EGR cooler sits under the intake at the back of the engine, and reaching it is hours of work at £60 to £100 an hour at an independent or £100 to £140 at a dealer, plus gaskets and coolant. The low-pressure loop has its own valve and cooler on top. The V8 costs more again.

The software delete is £220, once, for either engine. DPF and EGR delete in the same visit, £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Off-road and track use

The Q8 EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. A vehicle with the EGR removed from its software no longer meets the emissions requirements for use on a public road, and it is the owner's responsibility to keep the car to the use it is sold for. There is no version of this service for road cars; for those, an EGR clean is the legal route.

Q8 engine questions

Which engine is in my Q8, and how do I check?
The V5C has an engine code field, the badge on the tailgate reads 45 TDI, 50 TDI or SQ8, and the engine cover carries the displacement. If none of that is to hand, send us the reg and we will confirm the engine and ECU type from it before we set off.
Does the delete cover both the high-pressure and low-pressure EGR on the newer Q8 engines?
Every Q8 diesel is a Euro 6 engine with both circuits. We will confirm the exact scope of the delete for your engine when you call with the reg, before the visit is booked, so you know what is and is not covered.
Is the Q8 done through the OBD port, or does the ECU have to come out?
OBD in most cases. We confirm the ECU type from your reg before we set off, so if a particular ECU needs a different approach you hear about it on the phone, not on the day. Nothing is unbolted from the car in the normal course of a Q8 visit.
Does the delete change the power or fuelling on the Q8?
No. The delete targets the EGR maps only. Fuelling, boost and torque limits are left exactly as Audi set them, so the 45, 50 or SQ8 puts out what it always did. It is not a performance remap, and we do not sell it as one.
