The replacement bill on an A8
The A8 is a dealer-serviced car for most of its first life, and the EGR bill reflects that. On the 3.0 TDI V6 the part that usually fails is the cooler, not the valve, and it sits buried under the intake pipework at the back of the engine. Getting to it on a D4 means lifting the intake tract and everything above it, and the labour hours dominate the bill: parts, gaskets and coolant on top, at £100 to £140 an hour at a dealer or £60 to £100 at an independent. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted. The 4.2 TDI V8 is a bigger engine with less room around it, and the hours follow. On the D5 50 TDI the layout is newer and the same in principle: a cooler that takes most of a day to reach.
Then the new cooler goes back into the same duty cycle that cracked the first one, and the second failure is on your money, at the same rates, with the car out of warranty.
Clean, replace or delete
| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |
Read it straight. An A8 that is used on the road should be cleaned, not deleted: cleaning is legal, it is the cheapest line on the table, and on a car with a light build-up it works. Replacement is the right call when a valve has physically failed on a road car. The delete is for the off-road or track A8 whose owner is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.
A8 engines covered
A8 D3 3.0 TDI, 4.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI, 2003 to 2010
The first-generation V6 TDI has the cooler-led fault: coolant loss with no leak, then valve and throttle fouling. The 4.0 and 4.2 TDI V8s have a thin EGR record at model level.
A8 D4 3.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI, 2010 to 2017
The EA897 3.0 TDI is the one we see most on the A8, and its cooler is the expensive, buried one. The 4.2 TDI V8 is the same story with more engine in the way.
A8 D5 50 TDI, 2017 onward
The EA897 evo V6 with high-pressure and low-pressure EGR circuits, so two loops to foul instead of one. Newer, shorter record, same remap.
Every A8 diesel is covered. See Audi EGR delete for the rest of the range, or call 0161 694 7331 for an engine not listed.
What happens on the day
We come to the car: home, office, a secure car park. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. The engine is restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and the A8 does not go anywhere. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.
