How Toyota pickups and 4x4s get used

The Toyota diesels we get called to are the ones bought for their reputation for going on forever, and then worked accordingly. The Hilux is the farm and site pickup: stock trailer or plant trailer on the back, a week of gateways, field tracks and short hops between yard and job, with long spells of idling at the feed store or the gate. The Land Cruiser is the estate and equestrian tow car, the vehicle that pulls a horsebox to a show and spends the rest of the week on lanes and tracks at low speed. The Proace does the trade and courier round, six or seven addresses a day with the engine off at each.

None of that is the sustained, hot running the EGR system needs. Recirculated exhaust carries soot, and soot only burns off when the intake stays hot for a proper stretch. Low-speed loaded work, idling and short runs never get it there, so carbon builds on the valve until it stops seating and packs the intake manifold behind it. Plenty of Hiluxes and Land Cruisers also spend most of the week on ground that is not a road: farm tracks, moorland, forestry, quarry haul roads, estate work. That is the use this service exists for.

What changes after the delete

The ECU stops commanding the EGR valve, so a valve stuck with carbon can no longer put the vehicle into limp mode or store a P0400-series code. The EGR circuit is closed in software, so exhaust gas stops passing through the cooler and into the intake, and the soot that packs a D-4D manifold stops arriving. There is no repeat valve bill and no manifold strip, because nothing comes off the engine. The vehicle stays where it is parked, the remap takes about an hour, and it is back on the job the same afternoon with fuelling, boost and torque exactly as Toyota set them.

Toyota models and engines we cover

Toyota's pickups and 4x4s use Toyota's own D-4D engines. The Proace is a different case: it is the Peugeot Expert and Citroën Dispatch with a Toyota badge, and it runs PSA engines. The Peugeot EGR delete hub covers the sister vans.

Hilux (Mk7 and Mk8), 2.5 D-4D 2KD and 3.0 D-4D 1KD 2005 to 2015, then 2.4 D-4D 2GD 2016 to 2020 and 2.8 D-4D 1GD from 2020. The 2KD and 1KD foul their valve and cooler and pack the manifold with carbon; the 2GD and 1GD are widely reported for EGR and intake fouling alongside DPF trouble on the same low-speed use. See Toyota Hilux EGR delete.

Land Cruiser (J120 and J150), 3.0 D-4D 1KD 2003 to 2015, 2.8 D-4D 1GD from 2015; J200 4.5 V8 D-4D 1VD, sold in the UK from 2008 to 2015. The 1KD is the engine with the bigger bill, because the manifold clean comes with the valve; the 1GD's valve is the repeat failure. See Toyota Land Cruiser EGR delete.

Proace (Mk1 2013 to 2016, Mk2 2016 onward), 1.6 HDi DV6 to 2019, 2.0 HDi DW10, 1.5 BlueHDi DV5 from 2019. The DV6 fouls its valve with carbon and is the usual limp-mode call; the DW10 sticks its valve. See Toyota Proace EGR delete.

Avensis, Auris, Corolla, Verso and RAV4, 2.0 D-4D 1AD and 2.2 D-4D 2AD, 2005 to 2018. Valve sticking with carbon on cars that mostly commute. The 2AD's head gasket is a separate fault the delete does nothing for. No model page yet; we confirm from the reg.

Every engine above is £220. If yours is not listed, call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will check it.

More than one Toyota

Run three Hiluxes on the farm and a Proace for the shop? We do all four in one visit, at the yard or depot, worked around the day so the vehicles go out as normal. £220 per vehicle, no call-out charge on top, and each one is off the job for about an hour. Send us the reg for every vehicle beforehand and we confirm the ECU type on each before we set off, so nothing holds up the day.

Questions from Toyota owners and operators

Can you come to a site, depot or farm to do a Toyota?
Yes. We are mobile only and cover a 40-mile radius of Eccles, which takes in Greater Manchester, most of Lancashire and Cheshire, and Merseyside. A farmyard, an estate yard, a site compound or the road outside your house all work. We need the vehicle, the keys and somewhere to stand for an hour.
I run more than one Toyota. Can you do them in a single visit?
Yes. Several vehicles at one address in one visit is the normal way we handle small fleets, and mixed fleets are fine: two Hiluxes, a Land Cruiser and a Proace in the same yard is one booking. Each vehicle is £220. Give us the reg numbers when you book and we prepare every file in advance.
How long is the Toyota off the road for?
About an hour, and it does not go anywhere. We connect at the OBD port where the vehicle is parked, read the stored codes, write the delete, restart and check the live data, then clear the codes. No parts to wait for, no drop-off. If it is in limp mode when we arrive, that does not stop the remap.
Can you do the DPF and the EGR on the Toyota in the same visit?
Yes, and on the 2.4 and 2.8 D-4D the two faults often arrive together. Both deletes done in the same visit are £445, and the DPF and EGR delete page explains what that covers. If the DPF light has been on alongside the EGR fault, say so when you call and we prepare the right file for both.
