The replacement bill on a Porsche diesel

Every diesel Porsche sold in the UK runs a VW Group engine, and the EGR bill is a VW Group bill with a Porsche badge on the invoice. On the 3.0 V6 TDI in the Cayenne, Macan and Panamera, the part that fails is usually the cooler rather than the valve. It sits in the valley of the engine under the intake manifold, so reaching it means stripping the top of the engine, and the labour hours are where the money goes. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted at an independent. The cooler, with gaskets, coolant and the hours to get to it, pushes the total into four figures at a Porsche Centre, and the 4.2 and 4.0 V8s are further to strip again. A clean is £80 to £200 and buys time on a valve that is fouled rather than cracked.

Then the new cooler goes back into the same use: school runs, town traffic, the same cold starts that fouled the first one. It fails the same way, and the second bill is on the owner's money.

Clean, replace or delete

| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted; cooler jobs well above | Until the new part fouls or cracks | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |

The honest reading: a Porsche used on the road should be cleaned, not deleted. Cleaning is legal, it is the cheapest line on the table, and on a valve that is fouled rather than failed it works. Replacement is right when a cooler has cracked on a road car. The delete is for the off-road or track Cayenne, on the estate or on the paddock, whose owner is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.

Porsche models and engines

The engines below are shared with the Audi Q7 and the VW Touareg, and they fail the same way in all three. The Audi EGR delete and VW EGR delete hubs cover the sister cars.

Cayenne (957 and 958), 3.0 V6 TDI 2009 to 2018 (EA897 from about 2011), Cayenne S Diesel 4.2 V8 TDI 2013 to 2016. The V6 is the expensive one: cooler failure with coolant loss and no external leak, plus valve and throttle fouling, with the cooler buried under the intake. The V8's record is thinner. See Porsche Cayenne EGR delete.

Macan S Diesel, 3.0 V6 TDI 2014 to 2018. The same EA897 V6 as the 958 Cayenne, with the same cooler and fouling pattern in a tighter engine bay. No model page yet; we confirm from the reg.

Panamera Diesel, 3.0 V6 TDI 2011 to 2016, and Panamera 4S Diesel, 4.0 V8 TDI 2017 to 2018. The V6 shares the Cayenne's cooler record. The 4.0 V8 is newer with a thin record. Confirmed from the reg.

Every engine above is £220. If yours is not listed, call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will check it.

What happens on the day

We come to the car: your home, your workplace, the estate yard. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and nothing comes off the engine, which on a V6 TDI is the whole point. We confirm the ECU type from the reg before we set off. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Cost questions on the Porsche

Why is £220 cheaper than a new EGR valve on a Porsche?
Because nothing is bought and nothing comes off. No valve, no cooler, no gaskets, no coolant, no labour hours stripping the intake off a V6 to reach the cooler, and no Porsche Centre overhead built into the price. The delete is a software change, written through the OBD port with the car parked where it is.
Should I try an EGR clean on my Porsche first?
Yes, if the car is used on the road. Cleaning is road-legal and the right first step, and on a valve that is fouled rather than a cooler that has cracked it can hold the fault off for months. The delete is for off-road and track vehicles only, where the owner has decided the EGR bills stop here.
Is it worth deleting the EGR on a high-mileage Porsche?
On an off-road or track car, yes, and the mileage is the reason. A 958 Cayenne at 120,000 miles has a cooler that has spent those years in exhaust gas, a replacement would go the same way in the same use, and £220 once takes the fault out of the software for good. We read the codes first and say if the car needs something else.
Is the price the same for every Porsche engine?
Yes. £220 whichever engine: 3.0 V6 TDI, 4.2 V8 or 4.0 V8, Cayenne, Macan or Panamera. No surcharge for the newer ECUs, and no call-out charge for coming to you anywhere within our 40-mile radius of Eccles.
