The problem with a failing EGR valve

What a software EGR delete actually does

An EGR delete is a software modification to the engine control unit. We connect through the OBD diagnostic port, read the existing ECU map, write a modified version that removes the EGR system from the engine's operating parameters, and re-flash the unit. The valve stays physically in place. Nothing is unbolted. No gaskets are disturbed, no corroded fixings are touched.

Once the remap is written, the ECU no longer commands the EGR valve. It does not open, it is not monitored, and the fault codes associated with it are cleared and do not return. The engine runs without the EGR cycle. This is a permanent modification, one visit, done, with no repeat cleaning schedule and no second replacement sitting in the near future.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fix my limp mode?
If limp mode is being triggered by the EGR system, which accounts for a high proportion of diesel limp-mode faults, then the delete resolves it. The ECU is no longer monitoring the EGR valve, so it cannot detect a fault and trigger a protection response based on it. If there are other underlying faults contributing to limp mode, these will be identified during the pre-remap diagnostic scan and discussed with you before we proceed.
What if I've already replaced the EGR valve and it's failed again?
This is one of the most common situations we see. A replacement valve on a van doing the same stop-start, short-run work through Northwich accumulates carbon at the same rate as the original. The conditions have not changed, so the fault returns on the same schedule. A software delete removes the EGR cycle from the equation entirely, there is no third replacement to plan for.
What if there are fault codes showing that aren't EGR-related?
