Why EGR valves fail on diesel engines

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a controlled portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The purpose is to reduce combustion temperature and cut NOx output. On a petrol engine doing mixed motorway work, the system can function tolerably. On a diesel doing urban routes, short runs, and regular idling, the carbon load in the recirculated exhaust gas builds up faster than the heat generated by normal operation can clear it.

The valve fouls. The intake passages accumulate deposits. The ECU detects that the EGR circuit is not performing within parameters, logs a fault code, and reduces engine output to protect the drivetrain. Limp mode is the result.

Ellesmere Port sits at a major road junction, with a significant proportion of local diesel traffic doing short industrial runs between the town's commercial estates, the oil terminal, and the Mersey approach roads. This is exactly the driving pattern that accelerates EGR fouling. Cleaning resets the deposit level temporarily. A replacement valve resets the clock. A software delete removes the system from the ECU's map entirely.

A software delete addresses this by removing the EGR system from the ECU's operating map. The valve remains physically in place, nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no surrounding components are disturbed. The engine runs without the EGR cycle.

Vehicle coverage

We work across a wide range of diesel vans and cars. Vehicles commonly covered include:

Ford Transit (TDCi and EcoBlue engines), Mercedes Sprinter (CDI), Vauxhall Movano and Vivaro, Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6 (TDI), Volkswagen Crafter, Renault Trafic and Master, Fiat Ducato, and diesel cars across most major manufacturers.

Compatibility is subject to available tuning files for your specific make, model, engine variant, and year of registration. If you have a less common vehicle or an unusual engine configuration, call 0161 694 7331 with your exact details before booking. We would rather confirm over the phone than turn up and find we cannot write the file.

EGR delete is £220. EGR delete and DPF delete in a single visit is £445 for the combined remap.

How the job is done

We arrive at your location

home address, business premises, car park, or yard in Ellesmere Port or surrounding areas.

Pre-remap diagnostic

all current fault codes are read from the ECU and logged before any modification is made.

ECU remap via OBD port

we write the modified map with the EGR cycle disabled in software. The valve stays physically in place throughout.

Verification

the modified map is confirmed written correctly. The engine is restarted and checked.

Fault codes cleared

all stored codes, including those related to EGR performance, are cleared.

Done

typically 60-90 minutes from arrival. No recovery needed.

No engine bay access is required. No components are removed or disturbed. The vehicle is driven away on the same day.

Price and what is included

£220 covers the visit, the remap, and the verification. There is no separate call-out fee, no diagnostic charge, and no per-hour rate. The £220 is the total.

For context: an EGR valve replacement is typically £300-£700 fitted, depending on the vehicle and whether corroded fixings or surrounding components complicate the job. Cleaning intervals add further cost over time. The delete at £220 is a single fixed cost with no scheduled repeat visits.

If both EGR and DPF need addressing, the combined remap is £445, both done in the same visit, no second call-out.

FAQs

What if the fault is a hardware failure rather than a software issue?
The pre-remap diagnostic reads all current fault codes. If the codes suggest a hardware failure, for example, a seized valve or a wiring fault rather than a performance/efficiency fault, we will tell you before proceeding. A software delete resolves software-detectable EGR faults. If there is an underlying electrical or mechanical issue unrelated to EGR performance, that would be separate to address. We will not write a remap and charge you if it is clear beforehand that the delete will not resolve your specific fault.
How is a software EGR delete different from fitting a blanking plate?
A blanking plate physically blocks the EGR port, it is a mechanical fix that requires removing components and disturbing potentially corroded fixings. A software delete modifies the ECU map so the EGR valve is never commanded to open. The valve stays in place, nothing is dismantled, and there is no risk from corroded bolts or damaged gaskets. The outcome is equivalent, EGR system inactive, but the software route is cleaner and carries less risk on high-mileage vehicles.
Can you remap a vehicle that has already had an EGR valve replaced?
Yes. Whether the vehicle has the original valve or a replacement, the remap works the same way, it modifies the ECU map rather than interacting with the valve physically. We read the existing map via the OBD port and write the modified version. The valve's physical condition is not a factor.
What happens if the ECU will not communicate?
If the OBD connection does not establish correctly, we will diagnose the communication issue before proceeding. In some cases a faulty OBD port or a damaged ECU connector can prevent the remap, if this is the case, we will explain what needs resolving before we can continue. We do not charge for a visit where the ECU fails to communicate due to a hardware fault outside the scope of the remap.
