EGR delete in New Mills

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The engineering rationale is sound, recirculated exhaust displaces oxygen in the combustion chamber, reducing peak temperature and cutting NOx output. For a petrol engine doing mixed-speed driving, the system can function tolerably over time. For a diesel running stop-start routes, hill climbs, and rural service work, the kind of driving common around New Mills and the High Peak, it does not.

The carbon content of diesel exhaust gas is substantial. On an engine that rarely reaches the sustained temperatures needed to burn deposits off the valve surfaces, the build-up accumulates incrementally. The valve starts to stick or operate outside its calibrated range. The ECU detects that the EGR circuit is not performing within parameters, logs a fault code, and reduces engine output, limp mode, as a protective measure. The fault does not resolve itself. Cleaning buys time. Replacement resets the counter. Neither removes the EGR system from the ECU's awareness.

A software delete does. We remap the ECU via the OBD port to remove the EGR cycle from the engine's operating map. The valve remains physically in place, no dismantling, no blanking plates, no gaskets. The ECU stops commanding the valve and stops monitoring the circuit. Fault codes related to the EGR system are cleared and do not return.
