The fault that keeps coming back
The EGR fault tends to announce itself in stages. A rough idle first, then black smoke on acceleration, then a loss of power that gets worse on hills or at speed. By the time limp mode kicks in, the engine management system has already decided the problem is serious enough to dial back performance to protect the engine. For a van that needs to be on a job, that is not an abstract inconvenience.
The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve routes exhaust gas back into the intake to reduce combustion temperature. The fault code does not return because the circuit the ECU was checking is no longer part of the software.
The valve itself stays physically in place. Nothing is unbolted, no blanking plate is fitted, no gaskets are disturbed, no corroded fixings are touched. The modification is software-only.
The result is permanent. The EGR cycle does not restart after a few months. The fault code does not reappear at the next service interval. One visit, one fixed price, and the EGR fault does not come back.
What happens on the day
