The replacement bill on a Hyundai
Hyundai's diesel SUVs and crossovers share a family of CRDi engines across the range, and the bill depends on which one is fitted and what has failed. The Santa Fe's D4HB 2.2 and the smaller D4HA 2.0 both put the EGR cooler and valve within reach without a major strip-down, so an independent garage can usually do the job at £60 to £100 an hour against £100 to £140 at a dealer. A valve alone is £300 to £700 fitted. Where the cooler has failed as well on a Santa Fe with age and mileage, parts and labour together push higher. The 1.7 D4FD and 1.6 D4FB engines in Hyundai's smaller cars follow the same valve-sticking pattern and sit in the same £300 to £700 range.
Then the new part goes back into the same short-run, stop-start driving that fouled the first one. It fails the same way, and the second bill sits with the owner.
Clean, replace or delete
| Option | Typical cost | How long it lasts | Road-legal? | |---|---|---|---| | Clean | £80 to £200 | Months to a year or two, depending on use | Yes | | Replace | £300 to £700+ fitted; cooler jobs above that | Until the new part fouls | Yes | | Software delete | £220 once | Permanent | No, off-road and track use only |
Read the table honestly. A Santa Fe or Tucson used on the road should be cleaned, because cleaning is legal and works on a valve that is fouled rather than broken. Replacement is the right call when the valve or cooler has physically failed on a road car. The delete is for the off-road Santa Fe or the yard-based Hyundai whose owner is on the second or third EGR bill and wants it to be the last.
Hyundai models and engines
The D4HB and D4HA engines are shared with Kia, fitted under a different badge to the Sorento, so the fault record for one is the fault record for both. The Kia EGR delete hub covers the Sorento.
Santa Fe (CM 2006 to 2012, DM 2012 to 2018, TM 2018 onward), 2.2 CRDi D4EB on the CM, 2.2 CRDi D4HB and 2.0 CRDi D4HA on the DM, 2.2 CRDi D4HB then Smartstream 2.2 from the 2020 facelift on the TM. The D4HB's cooler and valve are the usual failure on the DM and early TM; the Smartstream unit is newer with a record that is still thin at model level. See Hyundai Santa Fe EGR delete.
Tucson and ix35, D4HA 2.0 and D4FD 1.7 CRDi. The smaller crossover pair, with the same valve-sticking record as the Santa Fe's D4HA. No model page yet; we confirm from the reg.
i30, Ceed and i40, D4FB 1.6 CRDi. The cheapest valve to replace and the one that fails most often, on cars doing the shortest commutes in the range. Confirmed from the reg.
Every engine above is £220. If yours is not listed, call 0161 694 7331 with the reg and we will check it.
What happens on the day
We come to the vehicle, at home, at work or on a yard. We connect at the OBD port, read every stored code, read the ECU file and write the EGR delete into it. Engine restarted, live data checked, codes cleared. Roughly an hour, and nothing comes off the engine. If the DPF is blocked as well, both are done in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.
