The EGR warning tends to arrive gradually, then all at once. A rough idle develops first, the engine runs unevenly at low revs, particularly when cold. Then comes hesitation under load, a flattening of power on the uphill sections of the main roads through the moorland edges. Then the warning light stays on, and when limp mode activates, engine performance restricted, RPM limited, the vehicle moving at a fraction of its normal capability, the ECU has decided the fault is serious enough to demand attention.

What is happening is straightforward. The EGR valve routes exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature. Diesel engines doing the kind of work common in and around Leek, short rural runs between the town and outlying farms and villages, stop-start trade routes across the Moorlands, rarely sustain the temperatures needed to burn off the carbon that accumulates in the valve and surrounding passages. The valve fouls, sticks open or closed, or loses the ability to regulate correctly. Cleaning removes deposits for a while. A replacement resets the clock. Neither changes the conditions that caused the build-up.
