It rarely arrives all at once. First a rough idle that clears when the engine warms up. Then hesitation pulling away from the lights or crossing the Crewe bypass. Black smoke on acceleration that gets harder to ignore. Then the vehicle drops into limp mode, engine performance restricted, RPM capped, the van no longer able to do what it is supposed to do.

When limp mode activates, the ECU has logged a fault code against the EGR system and restricted the engine to protect it. The EGR valve routes exhaust gas back into the intake to reduce combustion temperature. An EGR clean may clear the codes for a while. A replacement resets the component. The driving pattern that caused the build-up does not change, and neither does the eventual result.
